The weather was the same here Vera...one minute the boss was walking through the labs panicking we might not get home in one piece (it was fairly coming down) and teh next 'What snow??' and glorious sunshine. It was bitterly cold at the stables at tea-time |

Ok --Honeyb060674-- The reason we say "cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey " is.... 18th century ships had small boys, scuttlin thru the ship bringing the gunpowder from where it was stored to the guns...these boys were small and usually orphans who hung around the older men, hence they were called "powder monkeys" NOW ...the tray ,made of brass,( wont rust in sea water)that the cannonballs sat on bacame known as "brass monkeys" the cannonballs were held in a pyramid of 16 balls, so when the cold made the brass contract and the small indentations that the balls sat in, contracted and became shallow, scattering the pyramid it was known to be " cold enough to freeze the balls of a bress monkey "!! ,
never look a gift horse in the mouth ??? -----considered serious bad manners cos if someone GAVE you a horse you don,t look to see how old/valuable it is, you just accept it with grace.
Blue chip ( feeds ) ----blue chip is the highest value gambling chip
riding hell for leather?---- thought to be a shortened version of "riding so hard it would have been hell for the leather( skin ) of the horse
And my favourite ( that started this obsession of mine)
A white elephant stall---- ( full of stuff no-one wants )well, A white elephant is something much prized and thought to be a spiritual being. Now if you were thought to be plotting a to overthrow the King/President of the day, and he wanted you to know, that he knew you were secretly against him, He would bestow upon you the gift of a white elephant . Now you had to be gracious and accept this gift, but you also then had to keep it in a state of luxury AND it was not allowed for this animal to work so, frankly , it cost you, earned nothing and was a" mill stone round your neck" oh no....thats another one i,m off on one now !... must stop....or I will get no work done today ..or I'll be "flying by the seat of my pants " and I can't cos " I ve got my work cut out " need to " keep my eyes peeled " and not " fly off the handle " AAAARRRRGGGG ! can,t stop....knew this would happen.......
