Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give some ideas of what they have paid for cold showing in the ridden and also in-hand? What should you expect to be included for that price when you are at the show? Do you literally pass the horse over when it is ready to go in the ring?? Also for the people who prefere to have their horses produced from home and not send them away to be produced from a professionals yard, how do you manage your horses work etc, do you have the rider who is cold showing your horse come down to your yard occasionally to ride, does this work out costly? Just wondering what other peoples experiences of this are, as we have done both. Thanks.

Cold showing
- in-hand - I have paid between £25 & £50 per class (& usually tip if they do well) - this is literally handed at ringside - although most handlers will want to "assess" your horse before comitting
- Ridden - I would expect the going rate to be at least the same as in-hand if not more (not that i know anyone that cold shows - ridden)- as they are obviously risking their neck as well as the class being longer/ more involved / they would presumably want to work in etc!
To "properly" produce a ridden horse, I would expect that a rider would want to ride the horse quite a few times at home first, and they would want to be 100% sure that they were being worked "how they wanted" the rest of the time.
Although it obviously works for in-hand, i would be unsure how well it would work for ridden.

It's when a handler literally just shows the horse in the ring - owner gets the horse ready and brings to the ringside and then the handler takes over. Opposite is a horse being produced by the handler at their yard and they show it too. Hope that makes sense... |

Hi, I was wondering, as a few of the ridden producers that cold show, (meaning they do not have the horse on their yard to be produced) seem to be a long way from the yards where the horses they are riding in the ring are kept. So it must be difficult to visit them to have their practice sessions. I will hopefully be riding my own horses again soon, but due to an on-going injury and hip and arm operation it has had to be put on hold. I cant wait to take my girls out and be the one who is doing all the work in the background but also doing the riding aswell. In any case, it gives me great pleasure to see them out there competing and enjoying themselves. |

I produce and ride my own from home but I have shown a part bred from cold before ridden (I had sat on her before when a previous owner had her). I used to work her in myself then it would give me and the horse time to settle with each other. It varied on price as to how far the show was but normally it would be around £30 plus petrol if I wasn't already competing at the show. |
