that quite often depends on how much grass the stud has! If they have loads and are charging a good stud fee, then you may only have to pay £10 a week, or from £2 to £3 a day, with about £5 a day for a mare and foal.

some however have got wise to mare owners keeping the mares there for weeks on end because its cheaper than home and lets the mare owners grass grow, so they charge an amount to encourage you to pick up your mare asap!

Also if its too cheap do you get adequate supervsion of your mare? You have to visit each stud to see just waht you are getting.

Thanks Pat
Its not for sending a mare away its for mares coming to me and what you said about mares being left for weeks as its cheaper at stud than home has occured to me. I don't want to price myself out of the market but feel I should charge enough. Diy livery is £20 a week round here so was thinking £25 a week basic grass livery. We have lots of grass or a starvation paddock if needed.

Hi Kirsty,
I think that £25 per week just for grass livery is a bit excessive. I paid £10 a week when my mare went away at stud last year and to be honest, most mare owners want to collect them as soon as possible but I can see where Pat is coming from with the owners that leave their mare for months. Bit tricky really, but if you get a stable with grazing for £20 pw in your area I would suggest £15 pw for grass livery only and charge for extras such as worming, feed, farrier etc..

Good luck

Hi Kirsty,

The stud where I send my mares for AI usually charges about £3 a day mare only and £5 mare and foal, this is grass keep only. I usually leave them there for a couple of months as I like to have them confimred in foal at 32 days before bringing them home, although with Aliesha she famously spent 4 months there once before finally getting in foal!

Regards,

Paul

Someone on my yard sent their mare to stud and were charged only about £2 - £3 a day. She was there 6 weeks and came back in foal but looking like a hat rack covered in kicks and bites. Very wise words from pat ww!!!

We charge £15 a week for mare and foal out at grass. I think you need to keep your charges to a reasonable rate other wise it can be very exspensive for the mare owner and at some studs the keep works out more than the stallions stud fee..

Mares at grass only are £3.50 per day here and a mare and foal out by day ( weather permitting ) and stabled in the evening is £10 per day (2 feeds). I, for one, certainly wouldn't want the responsability of someone elses horse for £10 per week !! Having had numerous abandoned here to give the owners a ' rest ' I could see the farm full at that rate !! I would worry that if I was only paying £10 a week that my mare wasn't having daily visits and the attention promised. However keep fee's seem of little importance when some stud vets are charging £70+ for scanning !!

Just a note that the winning bidder for Ffatal in the breast cancer auction will receive free livery whilst the mare is here until scanned pregnant - then please fetch them home !!!! Hope everyone will bid and support this much deserved cause.

Just wanted to say that the only reason I was not worried about being charged £10 a week was because the stallion owner was a very good friend who usually charges a bit more. My mare has always come back from stud in top condition but she is not the sort to worry about being somewhere new or the sort to stress out and lose weight.

I would say that the price you charge usually depends on whether you are a business or whether your horses are a hobby.

One way to avoid horses being abandoned could be a signed contract to tell the owners that once their mare is scanned in foal and able to be safely transported that they have to come and collect them.

I have known 'top studs' charge top money for livery and the mares are just dumped out in a field, not looked after and come home looking the worse for wear.

So I suppose the answer is to check out where your mare is going, the most expensive place isn't always the best and neither is the cheapest. I would also try and get to visit my mare once a week just check on her, most studs, if they have nothing to hide will not have a problem.

Good luck Kirsty, as Delyth says it is a big responsibility looking after other people's little treasures.....Just make sure that you cover every aspect in case things go wrong.
