Hi there
I am wanting to show my 3 yr old Filly this season and she has a rather yellow tail (Should be grey/white). I did see a discussion a while ago on here about how to brighten/get stains out etc, but I cant find it. I am sure one person mentioned using the stuff you whiten Net Curtains with? Any tips or suggested products would be really appreciated.
The net curtain stuff, would that not cause irritation because no matter how carefull you are, water gets every where, down the legs etc
I did spot a product Cowboy magic "shine in Yellow out" whats this stuff like??

Only yesterday, I bought a net curtain whitener, that you can use in hand wash, so is non irritant, with the job of whitening Han's tail in mind. I'll let you know later if it's any good! |

The blue net curtain whitener is best but has all sorts of nasty chemicals in it. I used one without bleach in it (still designed for net curtains!) last year and it did work but you would need to use it a few times. I'll have a look in our potion box when I go to the yard later and see what it is called. |

Try using the juice from a squeezed lemon, always works for us. |

Gold Label shampoo for greys is BRILL - its cheap & cheerful & does work! On Sly my grey mud monster I wet his tail & then apply the shampoo neat & work it in really well - leave for 5 - 10 mins & then wash out - repeat if nec. Having tried other more expensive shampoos for greys - I have come back to this one as it really does work & is also gentle on the horse!

Heres a little secret, (opps not a secret anymore ) use some purple spray in your final rinse, not too much or you will get a purple tail, but it just takes out the yellow, I find that to get a tail really white you need to wash often and keep wrapped as much as possible |

Well I shampooed Han's tail with the gold label shamp for greys and white horses tonite ( ooooo it smells so nice!) and then used the glo white. Will post a piccie of the result tomorrow for you to decide Where's Vera when we need her? She keeps Dennis' tail amazingly white and I can't remember how she does it. C'mon V spill the beans |

LOL Heather
Do you mean like this?

The secret is Vanish, once only at the start of the season. First wash the tail washing up liquid and rinse well to get rid of the worst of the grime. Then soak the tail in a WARM WEAK solution making sure NOT to touch the dock bone. Rinse with hot water, rinse and rinse again. If you think you have rinsed it enough then rinse it once more just to be sure!!! Next wash with a shampoo of your choice and rinse well. Next and MOST IMPORTANT use literally a whole bottle of conditioner for dry hair on the tail and leave it on.
Washing with washing up liquid and then doing the vanish really dries the hair out as well as getting rid of all the inground grime so it is very important to use lots of conditioner and comb through.
If you can leave the conditioner on over night, rinse off the next day with just water. If the hair still feels a little dry then apply some (but a lot less) conditioner and again leave it in.
Then a regular quick wash every two to three weeks will keep it lovely for the whole season.
Personally I don't like bagged tails unless overnight.
IMHO you will get MUCH better results using warm water. I use a gas camping stove to heat mine.

Have you got any "before" photos, Vera and Heather. Would be great to see the difference!!!
I wish I had taken photos of my grey mare's tail, it has been a "mud spike" since Christmas, I managed to get rid of the spike, but now need to make the tail as white as possible!!
Carla, xx.

Ok still on "tails" but diversifying a little bit (sorry Big Mover) Freddie's tail is getting long and everyone says I will have to cut it before he stands on it! but I know you shouldnt cut their tails. SO being a bit thick here - what do you all do when they get this long - plait? and if so, just the bottom? top? Please help me before I cut it! Sandie |

oh my.....my cheeks are burning !!note to self " do not EVER post photo of my gelding" as you would all be horrified at the colour of his tail ! He is not at all keen on me getting round the back these days as he had a Urethral Rent, and had to have an epidural, and surgery . But I am totally enthused, and promise, once this awful weather changes, I will endevour to get his tail looking as FAB as all of yours !! or at least have a bash at it.thanks for the inspiration,...!
