I have put Dennis out today NAKED!!! Will my poo monster be a mud monster I wonder? Who am I kidding, he's been watching Mini doing her hippo thing so he is bound to follow. He's only in a tiny paddock which is fetlock deep in mud but he has a patio to stand on out of the mud!!

Any one else been brave enough to turn out naked yet?

2 weeks ago I turned Merlyn out without rugs..............he loved it! It was a nice sunny day though, so he had a real blast to himself. Fortunately he is steel grey, so it hids a multitude of sins!! I bet Dennis has had a great time!

I've got two who are naked all the time - they started out winter both as light greys. At the moment they are a sort of patchy brown colour! The two I've got who are yarded are cleanish, but have still managed to get dreadlocks in their manes.

It's probably too late now anyway, he's probably covered in mud from head to hoof!!

If the weather is nice this weekend I think Agonia will go out naked for a roll- I'm sure she's been trying to tell me all week she'd like to go out without a rug but with me being at work all day I worry she'd get too chilly.

Good luck with your mud monsters!

I did a couple of weeks ago - Freddie loved it and it was lovely to see him kicking his heel unencumbered. BUT today its tipping down, was all last night too so my mud monster is tucked up in bed waiting for the rain to stop.
Make the most of it Dennis, no doubt there is more rain around the corner!!

Arrhhh well for all those mud monsters I need to tell you about a little gadget I bought that breezes through mud.

I'll go off and try to find a link to one.

Mine's been out without rugs!
Nothing like seeing them have a good old roll in the mud, after months of wearing rugs!

I use wire wool (the saucepan cleaning variety!) to clean the mud off Andre, just gently rub over the area and hey presto!! No mud! He even prefers it to me using a rubber curry comb to remove it.

I can't find a piccy of it anywhere!

Its a bit like a cross between a shedding blade and a curry comb. The shedding blade is sort of coiled round to form 4 loops and attached to a wooden handle just like a metal curry comb.

It was only about £4 and the BEST THING EVER for getting mud of coats, even my wooly mammoth Shetland ponies coats is no match for this gadget.

What's it called Vera? Do you know who makes them? Think I need one....

As mine are out 24/7 you can imagine what they're like! I took my horses' rugs off during that lovely spring weather a couple of weeks back but it's cool and showery here today.

Blimey Vera, I haven't seen one of those for years! We used to use them when I ran a riding school/livery yard. They were brilliant, we just used to call them a mud scraper. They were also great when the ponies were moulting. Talk about blast from the past :))

Hope you and Dennis are well

You know what is going to happen now?!!! There won't be one of these gagets to be had in any tack shop up and down the UK!! I for one will be going for one just imminently, since my lovely white-grey seems to adore mud baths!

I put Sylvie out for a couple of hours rugless the other day and she really enjoyed it. Covered from head to toe in thick mud but she's casting just now (!?!) so she had a good scratch. I'm off work next week so will probably give her a few rug free days, weather permitting of course.

I've had one of those things for years but K won't let me near her with it as she is too ticklish! (She hates being groomed and I hate grooming so suits us both to be honest .)

I just let Crinky roll in the sand paddock....on the lunge...she can still have some fun, but I am hold of her! She loves rolling...and if I put her out at this time of year..she'd never forgive me!

We let ours out as often as possible for an hour or two without rugs, but we are very lucky as we don't get mud, even after all the rain of the last week or so the mud is no deeper than their hooves. Vera, Tariq often goes out in the school naked, he loves it. I went to ride Kadie out a couple of weeks ago, only to find she'd been put out naked, she went out grey and came back in skewbald. We are very lucky in that our ground is peat, so if they do get muddy it drys quickly and comes off really easy. We also use the curry comb that vera uses and it the best thing since sliced bread. Most good tack shops sell them. They're brill for getting loose hair out when they're moulting.

Hi

Although I do not have alot of mud, (sandy soil) I did for the last three days, as I have two willing 9 & 12 yr old horse mad guests children staying who revel in grooming muddy beasts, so let them loose this afternoon with brushes and voila! two very clean horses, sadly going home tomorrow, so back to rugs whatever the weather.
