Hi
I was wondering if anyone had recently purchased a bridle or rug etc from america.
I have been told that we now have to pay duty on anything that comes in from the states - can you confirm if this is so please.
Thanks Jackie

Careful! I have bought a lot of stuff from the US - bridles, books, rugs and never used to pay duty, but the last time I ordered a show halter in the usual way, I was hit for import duty. I think they clock onto an address if it crops up often. |

Hi Jackie, I have just placed an order with Schneiders for a number of new rugs and delivery is expected in the next couple of days. The carriage has cost as much as the rugs etc and I will probably receive a separate invoice direct from the carrier for the duty - I will let you know! Given that there are a few people travelling to Scottsdale in the next week perhaps they can bring some things back for you and there is sure to be a Schneiders stall there! |

Well, I have bought several items, big items, and have been hit with import duty every time last year and this. Previous year (2005)same items ...nothing. Everyone gets it now, so the chappie at Parcelforce told me when I was paying one of them. Like Sally, one set of items cost me with postage ove £500 and I was hit for an import bill of over £100...cant remember exact.

You have always had to pay on imported items from the US if the declared value is over a certain amount (£50, I think). You are charged VAT on the item, plus a Custom & Excise handling charge.
The reason some people haven't had to pay is that C&E don't have the time to check every parcel - so you can get a run of not paying, then get hit big time. There doesn't appear to be any kind of pattern to it, though you may well get more attention if you receive items frequently.
I have been buying stuff moderately frequently from the US for years, so have been there & got the T-shirt!

If you can persuade the company to pack it in plain brown paper and say it is a gift you won't have to pay duty. Otherwise I have always had to pay duty. |

Hi Keren, I guess I've been lucky then You're right it's illegal but I was advised to ask for things to be delivered in plain packaging and marked as gift and found it does work, some will do it ,others won't. The most expensive purchase I made was ordering some rope. Only some mecates but the duty was hurrendous! |

Hi all
Thanks very much for your replies.
I too have ordered goods in the past and paid no duty, but it was just that someone said that now you pay on everything.
Maybe I will take a chance as I have seen some lovely bridles on a site and they are really reasonable. I will let you know what the outcome is.
Hiya Sally Yeah I know they are off to Scottsdale, but with only one bag per person now being allowed I would think they will have some very heavy bags. Is it just america again that these new charges have been enforced on? Cindy is really well and I hope you and your horses are all ok and weathering the lovely welsh weather.

Hi Rozy Rider
Can you please explain - what the charges were? were they for delivery, duty, goods etc.
Also were they (if they were duty) a percentage of the goods total?
thanks

He tells me the item weighed 6.5 kilo's and the price £170, included the delivery. The invoice for Duty/Taxes came in at £18.77 and was listed as Disdursements out ot the scope of EU Vat = GBP £14.27 and Clearance Admin Charges Vatable at 0% = GBP £4.50, total of £18.77 to pay.. Fedex van delivered on Monday and the bill followed the next day, yesterday....marked as an Airwaybill. hope that helps, we've bought loads of things from the US, this is thie first time we've actually had a bill to pay, did expect to pay on other items........maybe its a random thing....Son also thought it might be worked as a percentage.... I have the Fedex Invoice/shipment in front of me in case you need anything else...its a Coventry address.& Email <invhelp@fedex.com>
and a while ago we bought GPS from US but, the PLACE was duty free.... and sometimes they will do a deal to pay the duty to get the sale.....
( as we are stating prices on here --- where is the ADVERT on AL ) ADMIN |

Sorry admin, but the prices stated are not to do with anything equine, just an example of what might have to be paid.

Hi Admin, Yes, the prices are nothing at all to do with equine sales, it's just an example of the Duty/Taxes now payable to import from the US, its an unknowm factor/cost and these figures are just a possible example of the added shipping costs, that everyone should be made aware of..hope that helps you understand our discussion, these bits were car parts. and some more came today on the Fedex Van so I think it will be followed by a Duty/Tax invoice tomorrow... Thanks Sue |
