When I was at school we had to do Shakespeare hence I know all the 'horse' quotes = 'a horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse' etc. but I adored the Hobbit & the Lord of the Rings, and later on read them to my boys - so when they made them into the films I just had to make the christmas pilgrimage with my sons (now 33 & 31yrs!)and surprise, surprise horse still feature highly!!
Despite all the horrible creatures dreamt up by JRR Tolkien and the filmmaker's interpretation of Orcs and Ringwraiths, all the heroes need are horses. In last year's film, Gandalf's own Shadoxfax is described in terms reminiscent of early writings of Arabians. He 'shines like silver and runs as smoothly as a swift stream'. When Aragorn lies cast up on the riverbank close to death, it is his horse, Hasufel, who gently nudges him back to consciousness and lies down beside him, so that Aragorn can be carried back to safety.
I've only seen the trailers for the final film but Aragorn is still riding out to do battle - presumably still with Hasufel, I can't wait - whatever will I do next christmas, watch the videos I suppose!

hi chris,
i loooove 'lord of the rings'!!!!
i have the tril (three in one) book, read it three times already and debating on starting again. only one draw back with the tril, it's so heavy! but soooooo good
i have the first film on vid, second on dvd, and eagerly awaiting new film. my son is the same as me, on the odd occassions that we are at a loss for something to do, we watch the films, again
the men are a good selling point for me as well as the horses

Me too, definitely a big fan. We have the vhs of both films at home and, since we dont have outside tv, i have watched both of them dozens of times...literally!! btw Chris, didnt it strike you as strange that gandalf wasnt riding shadowfax in the first film?? i thought he was introduced in book one...??...AND, i certainly think that they should have used an arabian for shadowfax, he would have been SOOO much more beautiful!! suyen. |

I'm with you there on both counts - not sure about the filming, wasn't it done in New Zealand? I know there are arabs out there but where the stunt horses came from I don't know - perhaps our resident stunt horse source - Louise - might know?
