Hopefully someone will be able to help me out. We need to open a company for our farm to receive certain payments, in the future I am hoping to have my own stud so I thought it would be better if we started off with the name we intend but what type of company do you use for a stud ie: limited, sole trader etc?????? Cannot seem to find any information anywhere.

Don't forget to check that the domain names .co and .co.uk are available for your chosen name too, no doubt at some point you'd want a website and be a bit peeved if your names were already taken. Worth getting the names registerred ASAP - you don't have to have a live website to do that. |

Hi,
There are various reasons for choosing either to be a sole trader, partnership or limited company, mainly related to income tax. You could use any of these forms of trading/business for a stud (or pretty much any other business for that matter), it really depends on your individual circumstances. I would suggest you consult a good accountant and make sure you explain the amount of income and expenditure you are expecting from your stud, and other income you will both receive from jobs/investments/etc, over a few years as this will influence the advice. Getting it wrong at this stage could cost you money in the long run so it's worth spending a few pounds on some good advice.
As suggested by Zara, Business Link www.businesslink.gov.uk is the government's delivery mechanism for advice and support to small businesses.
