Morning all.

I know Splash isn't an Arab, but she's Freya's best friend, and all of you are so lovely. I just need to pour my heart out a little bit.

Splash is our cob, and at 21 years old next year, she's my everything. We've had her for 11 years now, and she's my dream come true.

On Wednesday afternoon, she went down with colic. Our vet [Pat] came out and did his thing - rectal exam and buscapan, Splash seemed to come round and had a nibble of hay and looked to be fine.
Thursday Morning I went down early - 5.20am, and she was down again, looking very sorry for herself. Called Pat again, he came straight back out and took some blood as well as the buscapan and relaxant. Stuck his hand up her bum, all seemed fine. Her temperature was a little high, but that was to be expected with the colicing
Thursday afternoon, she was down again, and looked exhausted.
Called the Vets yet again, and a new girl came out, but was on the phone to Pat immediately, Splash's temperature was 44 degrees, and a heart rate of 89.
At this point, she was Pyrexic and a very sick horse.
Emergency referral to Rossdales @ Newmarket, and by 9pm we were there.
They put her on a drip as she was dehydrated, and took more bloods and some fluid from her gut wall.
We sat in the waiting rooms, knowing this was serious.

Vet came back.
So Splash didn't have colic as such. She had the colic like symptoms, but she wasn't having a problem with passing anything.

So she's still there now, and we still have no idea what's wrong with her.
She has an abnormal mass in her abdominal cavity.
She's had fluid taken from that which was sent to their lab for culture growth. Results from that should be back this afternoon..
On Friday they scanned and x-rayed, and peritonitis was a concern, so she was put on some strong anti-b's. She's still on those.
Saturday, we visited her, and had a chat to the vet who's in charge of scans. She didn't think she had peritonitis, but perhaps enteritis.
Yesterday, Cancer was mentioned, because of her age.
Saturday morning at 3am, she went downhill again and had grumbles and very nearly got cast, but thanks to her being in their ICU wing, she was okay.

I feel sick. I can't help her, and she's old. She owes us nothing, but she's my everything. This heartache is horrid and Christmas 2016 could very well turn out to be the worst year ever.
And poor Freya is standing staring at the stable blocks, neighing pitifully every now and then because she things that's where Splash is. And I feel useless, because not only is my darling Splash fighting for her life, but my baby Freya is moping around not eating because her best friend isn't there with her. Fortunately, our new girl is okay, and is happy to just stand with Freya instead of racing around like they usually do.

Sorry for the long one. I just needed to get it all out there and tell someone else, without having to see their face and hear the pity in their voice.

And you'll all understand.

xxx Anna

I'm so sorry to read this. You can't do anymore than you have, hopefully she will pull through. As they get older, like ourselves, things start to go wrong and it's such a worry. Keeping everything crossed for her and you keep positive. Freya probably knows there's something wrong with her friend so she will be upset but at least she has her other friend and her routine. Rossdales are brilliant. Hugs X

Just feel sick for worrying.

They took her for a nibble of grass today, as she now can't eat the hay, as it's become an irritant to her colon.
But she's happy to eat the grass, and hasn't gone down again since Saturday Morning.

It's probably stupid of me, but I did some google work, and now I've convinced myself she has every deadly rare disease a horse can get.
She probably hasn't.
But now I'm even more worried, because either they really don't know, or they have some idea, but no concrete 100% factual evidence to support theory, so are keeping schtump.

Thank you xx

So sorry you are having such a worrying time, I know the pain as we all do who care. I'm a Googler and can honestly say it's always been wrong only given me more worry. We had an old lad on the yard with similar, very poorly colic on and off over many days and have to say vets never knew what was wrong as all tests came back clear. It was winter but we found him some day turnout with grass and he lived many more years.
In my experience when vets have a clear diagnosis or are concerned for the outcome or welfare they are up front in guiding us. Splash isn't that old at 21 is in the best place for care and has all the love in the world from you guys.
All will be in thought and wishes xxx

You are doing everything you can for her and if things do not work out you know you have always loved and looked after her as well as anyone could. Vets will not tell you what might be wrong if they are not sure as this may give you the wrong impression.
Whatever happens always celebrate her life and know that she has not experienced life like so many of the poor horses that are mentioned on these pages.

Morning all

Went to Rossdales yesterday morning, 1. to see her and 2. to speak to her care team.
She's 'in a stable but fairly critical condition'
No hay whatsoever as she colics every time she has any.
The mass they found turns out to be her gut, it's that inflamed.
Still no clue as to why, but they're hoping that without the hay and with all of the meds, it will reduce in size and shift back to where it's meant to sit.
Still a higher temperature than wanted at 39.6, and her heart rate is still too high for the vet to be happy.

So she's having another scan today, and is going to try some hay... She might might might be able to come home soon, but we are also very aware she could very easily go downhill again.

But I'm praying for my very own Christmas Miracle.

Also, I'm so impressed with Rossdales, even though Freya was in back in January for her bone scan, she wasn't actually sick, just in pain.
The level of care and attentiveness is insane.
So happy she's there!

Thank you for all of your wishes, they are very much appreciated xxxxxx

Completely forgot to update!

She came home on the 27th Dec.. and although we're having to watch her closely and monitor absolutely everything, she seems to be okay.

They called it colitis when we collected her.
She still has abnormal inflammation of the gut wall, but we don't know why or how it happened.
So she's got to go back to Rossdales for her 3 week post 'episode' check - an external and internal scan, and her bloods have to checked once a month for 6 months.

Just, thank god.
It was touch and go, and we both [Mum and I] got to the point where I think we had almost accepted that she wouldn't be coming home at all

But she is, and we're relieved as I'm sure you can all imagine

xxxxx
