My mum is still waiting for me to give up horses (I am now 62 and might have mentioned this before...I forget!!) Is there something in us, the real horsey people, who just cannot imagine life without a horse?

I so agree. I'm 66 and lost my 22 y.o. homebred boy to colic last October . I had his mum before him for 20 years. I feel lost without a horse but at the same time , feel I'm too old to make the huge commitment to another one. I look at sale adds and dream ....

Misshana, have you thought of taking on a horse from WHW or similar? I agree with you that a new horse is a huge commitment but you would have the safety net if you became unable to look after him/her. One thing I have considered if anything happened to either of mine (16 and 11 so hopefully not yet) would be to have a rescued youngster for basic care and handling and then back to WHW for breaking and permanent rehoming. At 65 I understand how you feel about buying another horse but also how lost you must feel without your boy. I have lost 2 to surgical colics - the work of the devil. I was 35 when I had my first horse - 30 years ago next week - and can't imagine life without one now.

After much discussion my friend brought a older horse last year, she is so happy riding again after about 6 years, she was 65! One thing we did talk about was if she dident do it then she wouldn't be able to do it at 75!

It's a case of if you don't use it you lose it.

Don't dream when you could be living the dream.

My husband asks if I will ever give up, or grow out of horses, I just give him the look!

A life without horses, NO..........!

My friend lost her old faithful last year and thought she was too old for another horse, she is 60. So took on a rescue horse from Bransby Horses, with the back up if she cannot cope. She loves doing a 'good deed' and has a horse in her life again.

BTW I rang about a horse for sale last year, he was owned by a 91 year old and only for sale as she didn't feel she could start another youngster!

Yes, I think there is. I have loved horses ever since I can remember and come from a non horsey family I got my first horse when my kids were in their teens and the rest is history!!!

The Queen still rides at 90 but I do wish she would wear a hat; please, your majesty, we all need you to be safe for many more years.

I am sure she "lurks" here and will listen to me. Ha, ha.

Well I'm the same age as the NHS and with my sister bought three girls last year. One is broken in and my sister will ride her. All three were meant for preservation breeding.
We already had two oldies, both retired one is 26 and the other 20, the later is on permanent loan.
Of course the Queen would wear a hat if it would fit over her Crown.
We do actually have someone who looks after hem but have our own stabling etc.

Been obsessed with horses as long as I can remember Along came 3 yr old Arab when I was 12 back in 1971 not a first pony and non horsey parents with no interest at all, however against the odds Topper and me learnt together. Kept him to the end, looked to buy another "horse" I was 25 then and realised I was not only obsessed with horses I had Arabitus. My Crabbet lady Kate was with me the next 27yrs. I am 57 and Ari is 13 now had him since 18 mths.
He has kept me fit, given my daughter and me a shared passion other than grandchildren and being on a lovely small yard I have great friends of all ages. Being out in the fields and moor I see wildlife and walk my dogs with companions in safety.
Makes me wonder what my life would be without an Arab pal

I started loaning a 13.2 spotted pony at Pulpits Farm (and Arabian stud) in 1977...my parents bought Shiloh (TBx gelding) for me when I passed my O Levels, I owned him for 26 years until he was pts at 33. Ten years before I lost him I bought my first Arabian, Kharidian (Roger) as a foal and he is now 23 years young. When Roger was 16 I bought Chips as a weanling, he's now 7.

So I've been at the same yard for 39 years, have owned my own horse(s) for 37 years and still have two of the three horses I've ever owned. I've been very fortunate!

Caryn

Kharidian (Prince Sadik x Khiri)........ Alkara Cassino (H Tobago x Rose Aboud)
aka "Roger".................................... aka "Chips"

When I was 28 I got my first pony for me and the kids to enjoy, she was a 13.2 ish mare. She had previously bred a lovely chestnut foal to an Arab stallion (I think he was called Blue Mink) After a couple of years I went to pulpits to look at mikhan but in the end I bought my first pure bred from the van lennups yard in 1980. That was my boys mum , how I loved that mare. I bred her to Astar at 16 and got Ben who I lost so suddenly in October. There have been others in between including crystal raj who tragically broke his leg in the field. My friend will let me ride one of her horses but I must admit I don't get the same feeling as with my Arabs. I just don't feel I could cope with losing another one again. I'm going to wait till next year and see how I feel I know the sensible route is from a rescue centre and that is probably what I would do. In the meantime I will keep dreaming lol

I feel a mere youngster at 52 and yes I think my non horsey family are waiting for me to outgrow horses bless them. I started riding when I was nearly 4yrs old and bought my first pba with money left to me by my nana when she died . I was 14yrs old, she was 14.2hh and called Greetland Cleopatra and was a devil when I got her for the sum of £550 . Owned horses ever since and I have just agreed to buy a 2yr old Arab filly to help keep some very old bloodlines going , looking forward to picking suitable stallion for her and then backing and competing her once she's weaned the foal so long term plans for her #128512; fingers crossed we will all be riding and enjoying horses for many years to come

Just a couple of words for anyone who thinks they might be past riding (or indeed anyone who fancies something different) - CARRIAGE DRIVING. I was lucky enough to get hooked on it before I became disabled so I can still go out and compete. Arabs CAN do it; both pure and part-breds - indeed there used to be driving classes at Haydock! Kharidian and Paul Atkinson drive pure-breds, and my Red in my sig pic is 50% Arab by Vlacq Khazad. It's great fun and even before I became ill, and could still ride, I was choosing to drive instead!

Lovely post garnet. Sadly too late for me and with osteopurosis I have to be careful. I had an accident in the middle of September and fractured my wrist in five places. It was a significant trauma and would have broken even if it didn't have osteoporosis but because my bones were weak it couldn't be pinned and plated so just had to be manually manipulated into place so I have a very odd hand/arm alignment (or should that be missalignment)! However, it all works so that is OK.

I love to see Arabs being driven; I think it was Count Ziggy Thyssen who had some really lovely photos on the internet of his gorgeous horses being driven, and, as you say, Paul Atkinson does it so beautifuuly.

Well done all of you, photos would be lovely of any of you driving, don't have to be Arabs as I also love to see vanners!!!

Thank you Ari and Barbara, and sorry to hear you have had such a rotten time with your accident, Barbara. If I can get Flickr to oblige I will post some pics - vanners too! The black Irish cob in the sig pics was originally my husband's riding horse and then taught me to drive and got me hooked - sadly lost to a pedunculated lipoma only 3 weeks after those pics were taken. I also have a 14.3hh gypsy cob, Sam the Man, who is a good lad!

Right, don't hold your breath - this could take all night!

So far so good!

Sam the Man at Royal Three Counties last year - lap of honour to Queen 'We are the Champions' - what more could anyone ask? It meant such a lot to be back in that ring after all the years with Garnet at the National Arab Show - I was one happy bunny!

Red at Ashbourne winning the bet I made a year earlier that I could break him to drive and have him at that show. They all said it couldn't be done...

At 68 I have two, one purebred and a Belgian warmblood, 21 and 27! Looking now for another happy hacker as I want to semi retire my oldest and my purebred throws himself inside out at the prospect of going out on his own!.
Sadly I too lost my 22 year old purebred to sudden severe colic a year ago last january.. he would go anywhere on his own and I miss him dreadfully.
I don't intend to give up till its forced upon me then I would rather have my boys pts at home rather than risk a pillar to post situation.

Thank you so much Goldenmane and Barbara - you are very kind! Jim the Cob we were told had been driven in Ireland and I was inspired to have a go when friends were breaking their daughter's outgrown Section A to drive. He was brilliant, bless him. Sam was bought as a 6yo ride and drive as I am no longer fit enough to start a youngster, but Red was my baby - we bought him as a 3yo and I broke him to ride and did showing and dressage. I decided to break him to drive after seeing a Hackney cross who looked very like him at Ashbourne show and that was when I made the bet that I would show him there the following year. By that time he had already qualified for the Osborne championships at Towerlands at his first driving show. He had already been longreined as a youngster and I just built on that, in spite of everyone telling me he wasn't suitable and it couldn't and shouldn't be done. Judges were always impressed and surprised to learn that he is 50% Arab so he did his bit to prove the versatility of the breed.

Lovley photos, only driven a few times, I drove a 4 wheel, it's harder than it looks and it feels fast. Got a couple of Mini horses here at mo,very small, I think they would make a good driving team.
