I used to love winter as a child, couldn't wait for snow. Didn't mind it for years even looked forward to change in horse routine. However last few years (since the 50 birthday) I am enjoying summer and all it brings so much more so winter has become a major inconvenience more to be endured and got over. Still like the cold sunny dry days lol. Anyhow clocks go back its cold in West Yorks and first night with rug for Ari. A few weeks in and I will be fine well used to the mud, stable work will keep me slim and fingers X no extreme weather. We have Christmas to look forward to and the nights get lighter after 21/12.

The good news is that NIGHTS start getting lighter after 13th Dec although MORNINGS keep getting darker until 6th Jan. I can't understand why, and as a physics teacher I probably should, but let's be grateful for small mercies! The two milestones I look forward to - Christmas and the Boxing Day drive and then show schedules start appearing. The rest - poo! |

Oh, I'd never heard that before, Garnet - I'll have to investigate!

Kharidian, have you been delivering babies, up so early? Well I'm definately getting older as for the first time I forgot to change the clocks! Mine are out 24/7 so our routine goes with the light but I will start lighting a fire at home on these dark evenings. |

I must admit I don't mind the winter, I find its easer to ride as the horses are in more, it's getting in to a routine that is hard this time of the year, and the shell I bring them in or out, horses are to hot or to cold. Once the horses are in its so much easer.
I love Christmass, and on a day out with mum, managed to get a, well it's a like a snow globe but in the shape of a snowman and the snow in side light up and from time to time spins around.
As you see the extra hour is wasted as hubby's alarm keeps going of, something it never dose. |

I also used to love winter but then I had two chestnuts, now I have two greys and, oh boy, do I dread all that rain and mud! Also I seem to have developed chilblains, achy joints and runny eyes, is that old age? |

No Firelight, those symptoms are having horses!! I bet your'e a lot healthier than a lot of people who don't have them. I have noticed my nose runs a lot when I bend over, now that is old age! |

It is the rain and mud I dont like. That is because of the dogs. When they are dripping all the time I cannot cuddle as often. I have a beardie now and he is the soggiest dog I have ever owned. In the snow he is magnificent! |

Well spotted, Goldenmane! Yes...so when everyone else was having an extra hour in bed, my 12 hour nightshift became a 13 hour shift (we don't get paid for the extra hour by the way). Where else but the NHS would this be considered acceptable lol.

I am inspired as ever by your input so looking at positives. Ari doesn't settle well in stable in summer however very happy with winter routine in at night tucking into haylage. We have fabulous late summer turnout with many acres, horses love it but it's hard work. Winter fields are close to stables, so much easier to get in and go. Have to say us horsy ladies must be among the healthiest as we regularly do good excersise and enjoy it. |

Kharidian, I remember those!! I used to work 12 hour shifts in an ambulance control room, oh what fun.
Now I'm retired and live in Spain and no longer dread the winters as I used to in the UK. It gets cold here but it's generally a dry cold, and winter days can be lovely and warm. I don't think I would ever choose to live in the UK climate again brrrr.

Kharidian, I always assumed days got longer from both ends once the shortest day had gone. I only found out when I was teaching about the solar system and a pupil brought in a table of sunrise and sunset times which her father used at work at an airfield. It cheered me up no end! |

Thanks Barbara....had an awful ride yesterday when Prince Charming decided he didn't like traffic, spun round and cantered off as a white van approached!!! Really naughty,....tried it 3 times with me, not scared, drivers weren't too bad. He obviously got out of the wrong side of the bed! I was not a happy bunny! Today a lesson in the rain, but it was brilliant, only hampered by rider fitness :( oh I wish I could ride every day again....and so wish I could afford more lessons, love them!!! I was so hot today even in the rain... :) So was he :) Needs a clip! |

Guess he was having a "Prince not so Charming" day! Naughty boy. Glad you had a good lesson even if it did rain.
