Had dogs all my life but so much has changed with feeding, socializing and training since I last had a pup I am open to any tips, advice or experiences.
I have done all the common sense things, chosen breeder on recommendation not an advert, made sure parents are health screened, seen dogs from previous litters, visited pups with their lovely mum from week 1 and now it's only a week away to Dolly coming home.
She will be going to socialization and training classes from 12 weeks and have a great mentor in my wonderful Dexter.
It's a huge responsibility that I take very seriously so any advice is helpful

It does sound like you have thought alot about Dollys arrival. I always recommend to my puppy boarders that insurance in the first year is a good investment, with luck you wont need it but if pup gets into an accident or their is a health issue you'll be glad of it. Along with feed the best diet you can afford for at least the first 14 months. Where is Dolly going to sleep? Are you going to crate train.. I think she is a poodle x and they can be quite chewy, done carefully dogs love their den and it is a nice safe place to leave them overnight and when you pop out. Make sure you have a nice safe way to travel pup in the car, a cat box in the front footwell works well for a little one and you can keep an eye on them. Frequent little car trips are good to accustom pup to travel, along with socializing visits to friendly garden centers, pets at home in arms etc Puppies have a calm and accepting response to most stimulus in the first 16 weeks of life so its important to expose them to as much as possible. most important ..enjoy!

I would ask foe a small blanket or towel with the litter's scent on to make the puppy feel safe and secure and a get her a big cuddly toy to snuggle up to. My very first puppy was so upset at night that I gave her my teddy bear that I cherished from my childhood to settle her and she refused to part with it. It eventually succumbed to her teething and alas Ted was no more but by then she was part of the pack! |

Thank you all for kind thoughts and good advice. I promise pictures and if I can't master posting from my IPad I may need a kind volunteer to PM their email so I can send them to be posted.
A garden centre is something I hadn't thought of and I will be taking her to the stables in the car to meet people I just won't put her down on the yard until vaccinations complete. Socialisation is so important so grandchildren will be involved from the start and I have many friends with lovley dogs so will make the most of her early learning.
Crate training is new to me but is a must as I can see the advantages of her loving her den and it being a safe place for her; things I don't want chewed and not least the very tolerant but precious Dexter and cats when I have to leave them home alone.
Dolly is a working cocker spaniel x miniature poodle so a " Cockerpoo" not a pedigree; but to me a justified gamble on two canine personalities that fit with me.

a load ticking clock is a great comfort to a puppy also as it reminds them apparently of their mothers heartbeat , had one for our dog when he was little. So hard for them the first few days, missing mum and siblings but its quickly forgotten as they settle in . |

That's good to hear Debs as I will have to feed her puppy meals seperate as Dexter has low phosphate diet and he certainly won't entertain going in her crate. Crate training wasn't heard of when he was a pup. I will occasionally feed them together with a little food safe for both as Dex isn't food aggressive with cats or dogs and thats a good lesson for her to learn. We have a large crate but will it be better to use a smaller one whilst she's small?

Ari i have always used as large a crate as possible, when they are very small i put the bed in one end and the papers at the other end for accidents during the night. Our Percy Pointless still sleeps in his crate even with the door open Try to stop worrying and just enjoy, cannot wait for photos , lots please when Dolly arrives |

There will be lots of photos of Dexter and Dolly but I may need help. As Debs says it may be easier to train the pup than me to post from Ipad lol. Sally you are right, I need to stop overthinking this and enjoy. I have had upto 3 dogs and 4 cats on the go in the past with no problems. |

Thankyou Kharidian and Ari, took a while to convince the vets about how many tablets he needed , the UK vets start on very low dose so he was not improving very quickly. I joined 3 pages on FB with Addisons experts on from all over the world, the advice was fantastic and they were spot on with their help, luckily my vet went along with the increase in dosage and the blood tests levelled out and he is now fit and well. Hes a good boy for his pills as well, he has 4 morning and 3 evening at present but this may need to increase over time. Ari Percy says get lots of chewy toys for Molly so she dose now follow his example and eat the house , he says you can get some lovely flavoured nylon bones to chew, he likes chocolate flavour |

Thanks will take Percy's advice on choice of chews. I have already moved my Ariats to safety and the days of leaving my tack in the kitchen are coming to an end. So glad Percy is fit and well, however good vets are sometimes it's best to do the research and question to get the best outcome. I found this with Dexter's early CKD, vet was happy for him to continue on his normal food but I found I could do much better for him and his kidneys by improving his diet. |

You must be very excited Ari not long to go?
I think the decision to crate train is an excellent one, particularly given Dexters special diet.. it wont take a sharp little cocker poo long to learn 'in your bed for her dinner' and it is good to make nice strong positive associations with the cage. Ive puppy walked lots of Guide dogs and exactly how you do it is down to you.. i have a range of sizes so that i can have a cosy den ( I cover the crate with a blanket) for the dog and not too much room to wee in as I use it as an aid to toilet training. Generally dogs don't want to mess their beds so I pop pup back in to the crate when they are snoozing so when they wake they give a whine and I take them straight out to the toilet, it is useful for Guide dogs to make a noise to be let out to go 'busy' but i know lots of people dont let the dog out until it is quiet. This way may give you a wet bed (I use vet bed so pup isnt lying in a pool) but generally pups are clean overnight within a week. If the pup is food orientated they are usually pretty clean in the house too using this method as you get lots of hits outside they have associated the command 'Busy' with the spending action and the reward for doing it!

Yes very excited and just a bit apprehensive as I so want it to go well. Dex is no worry he loves company and will be snuggled up with girly in no time. My 2 cats sleep with Dex and they are my worry but she is tiny and it's down to me and Dex to help them out. They may sulk a bit but that's cats and they know where there home is and will get over themselves and will be ok with the change in their own time. Your advice on crate training is much valued as totally new to me thank you. Dex after all these years goes out to wee wees. Lol
