My boy got a puncture wound last week. I thought id given it a good flush but wasnt sure how long he'd had it. He had a bit of bruising round it which went down and no lameness. Its about 2inches below the hock on the outside.
Then last wednesday it looked a bit puffy on the outside of his leg (between fetlock/hointrask) so I called vet and got antibiotics to start that evening. I put on a poultice and bandaged. Next morning hock was huge, still happy, eating and weight bearing.
Vet came out, had a poke about, no tendons or ligaments damaged, no fractures etc but was deep through to splint bone, said she wasnt too worried. Said as his leg was bandaged the swelling went up the way, if I left the bandage off it would start to pull down...as it was in the time she was there and bandages left off. I wasnt to poultice but apply intrasite gel, dry dressing then bandage leg. then once hole was tiny to use a honey dressing.
He got IM abx, then I was to give 2 sachets instead of 1 for 3 days, then once a day for 3 days.
Tomorrow hes supposed to go to 1 a day but his hocks still big, so I plan to keep it at 2 and if still big on monday, phone vet again. His leg is still bandaged to keep it clean. Ive been keeping the stable bandages off during day but keep dressing in place with a crepe one. Hes been walked out 2/3 x daily. Sound in walk but lame in trot. Still loving his food.
Anyone had experience....does it take ages for it to clear up? Id of thought id of seen a big difference by now.

| I saw this a couple of times with TBs (they seem to be quite prone to dramatic reactions to puncture wounds!).I think the main thing is the antibiotic,one did cold hosing but wasn't bandaged just cleaned and disinfected daily,it did take quite a few days for the swelling to go down though,but it did eventually and she was ok. |

Just collected one of mine from the vet hospital... Something and nothing puncture wound on the inside of the forearm, couple of inches above the knee and about the size of the top joint of my little finger. Just didn't heal, swelled, antibiotics made no difference... Fortnight later X-rays showed that the puncture had damaged the radius and he had two tiny flakes of dead bone sequestering. Had to be removed under GA - thank heavens for insurance.
ETA 1/10 lame - 2/10 max when lunged on circle on the hard at the vets as part of the work up. |

Im dreading any possible complications..this is the first injury Ive had to deal with since I lost my old mare last summer to sepsis following a wire cut. I felt sick and very emotional at work on thursday when i phoned the vet. This boy means the world to me and Im now totally paranoid because of last year. I'll see what vet says on monday.
Brushing boots..cotton wool..and bubble wrap from now on! lol

We have just had similar with a TB, the puncture wound was 3inch below the hock and only 1/2 inch if that but deep. Our vets like to have them in for a few days to flush the wound and x-Ray. And she did have a small area of bone damage that remained attached and was healing well on repeat x-Ray.
I know that sick with worry feeling well its aweful but no tendon or ligament damage and swelling can take days to go down even with antibiotics. |

Well thank goodness, all virtually swelling has now gone from his hock. Think another 2 days and itl be back to normal. We just need to concentrate on getting the wound to heal from inside out now. So itl be a while yet before hes allowed back out in the field. Im not chancing any mud getting near it.
The laceration on his other leg is doing well too. Its now skin level so Ive stopped dressing it and putting aloe vera on it.
Once the hole in the puncture wound heals up a bit more Ill be happier but I feel relieved the swellings going. |
