I hate schooling so to keep Armos properly exercised I usually get somebody to school him for me once or twice a week,rest of the times we hack out.There's a new girl at the yard now,she used to do SJ and now she does dressage.So she's schooling him now.She absolutely loves him and she says he could already win the first category as he is.
So I got a dressage saddle from a friend and she's going to take him to a couple of local dressage competitions next spring to see how he fares.Needless to say I'm a proud mummy!He's only ever hacked out and done some basic schooling and was originally trained Western (I still use a western bit when outside)
In the pictures it was the first time she schooled him with a snaffle and my saddle.

| Hes a lovely boy Pasch. I know thats not you riding him and i understand its very hot where you live but life is so very short and i wouldn,t dream of letting anybody ride any of mine without a hat on. If she fell off how do you know she wouldn,t sue you if she was badly hurt. Some of the modern hats contain vents to help cool your head which make riding in the heat a bit more comfortable. Sorry i am not getting at you i just have seen how easy it is for a horse to stumble and fall , only a couple of weeks ago a horse slipped and fell on the flat at the trec i was jump judging at , his owner was knocked out and fractured her spine or neck ( sorry forgotten which one ) she was taken away in the air ambulance which was the very thing that they were trying to raise money for . |

| Sab2 you are right and myself I always wear a hat (I have a very light Tipperary you don't even feel it's there) but here most people don't and it's not compulsory unless you are a minor (or in competitions of course).I didn't use one myself until a few years ago somebody I know almost died of a head injury.Mind you if you fracture your spine there's no hat that is going to help you.I will try to ask her. |

| Must agree with wearing a hat. My brother in law's horse threw him on a quiet hack, he landed on his head (horse 17hh) wearing a top of the range hat. Resulted in 2 bleeds on the brain and a stroke!!Leaving him with dysphasia (sp) affecting his cognative skills, speech and understanding. 2 years later still undergoing speech therapy and will never be as he was. And people are very quick to sue should the worst happen. |

Misshana as I explained I also agree in wearing a hat but I can't force her if she prefers not to.I will look into the legal responsibilities here in case of a fall,I am insured and my horses are insured against damage they could inflict to things and people.Your examples show you can get badly injured even if you are wearing one.
Anyway the post is not about hats  .Thanks Sharea and Callisto (no he hasn't done it before apparently,just shows how athletic and versatile Arabs are)

| Sorry wasn't criticising, bit paranoid since accident, must admit when I was younger, always rode without a hat. Your boy looks absolutely gorgeous, so envious of all that sun and blue sky |

| Thanks Pinkvboots,I'll have to wait until next spring as he's growing a teddy bear coat at the moment,he lives outside 24/7 with a shelter and he's not rugged,I am not going to clip him so have to wait until then.I don't mind,he'll have time to work and I don't want to turn him into a competition horse,it has to be a nice experience for him.Anyway the work he's doing is great exercise for him and makes him an even better ride when we go out hacking |

| I am not surprised. A lot of people misunderstand western training.If done properly it lays the foundation for dressage, but without the awfull overbending. He looks like he is enjoying this and your rider looks soft and understanding. I will overlook the hat thing and agree that back injuries are just as bad. However, as the pair seem to understand each other there is less likely hood of a tumble. |
