Has anyone used the "WeeFoalChecker" mare urine pregnancy test kits and if so were they pleased with them? You can get a kit that does the 38day to 120days post covering or one for 120day to 300day post cover. They are about £28. Therefore cheaper than a scan. Also apparently a scan at over 55 days can determine the foal gender, have any of you managed to find out what sex the foal was before it was born. I am having my two mares scanned next week regardless but did think it was about time there was a "home pregnancy test" for horses. I researched it and found there was the "WeeFoalChecker" I think it was only invented about four years ago.

I did think about using one a few years back, but you have to get the wee first, with a sani pad and then dilute it , so I didn't bother.
As to the sexing of your foals my vet did some last year and to be honest they said that they were only 50!% success rate! I suppose if your vet did a lot they would get better, so haven't had that done, but if I was having a scan at the right time I would ask if they could see. I had a mare scanned this year and you could see the sack the foal was in and the cord and movement in the sack and that was at 25days |

This takes me back! Many, many years ago there was a mare urine pregnancy test involving hydrochloric acid (believe it or not) and my YO and I used to add acid - I can't remember what else was involved - then shut ourselves in the cupboard under the stairs with a torch to see if the resultant mixture fluoresced (if it did, it was positive)! As I recall, the test was reasonably accurate and was the one of the only things available at the time, this being the early 1980s. Happy days!

Hi I used one took me 3 weeks to catch pee ,spent everyday wandering round field with pot in my pocket and when I did the test it wasn't clear if it was positive or negative sigh so ended up having blood test done .Turns out I just have a very fat mare .Good Luck

I have used one a few years back and it was correct ... I'm very lucky that our mare will always go for a wee as soon as she gets in her stable! ;) Mind you, I would always have my mares scanned by a vet on 21 days and the 42 days to confirm no twining and heart beat if scanning is possible.

I did not bother with pee test, just had scans, pally part bred is two months in foal. Crabbet mare is not... but I only took her in september as I was waiting for a lasered sarcoid to heal.... she is also 14 and maiden. Had a vet breeding check done before i took her and all looked ok. Will maybe try next year as she is a lovely lass. I will just carry on riding her til then.

Don't want to temp fate, but my mare is just in foal, scanned yesterday at 17 days, hadn't come in to season for 18 months and came in to season really strong on her own, she had had a vet check and scan last year, she's 19 now and this will be her 3rd foal, her last one was 4 years ago and her first foal was as a 4 yo
She will be scanned next week at 25 days to check again. So there's plenty of time for your mare.

| oh glo !! how exciting for you, ... I read your other post on breeding from "old faithfuls" glad it has worked out well. I have heard though, that mares who had a foal or two when they were young are much easier to get in foal when older than "old maids" it may just be an old wives tale ... incidentally I was told the same about breeding from your dog... and it proved true with my jack russell... she just had her first litter of pups age 6.5 after two yrs of turning her nose up at, what i thought were, very personable boy jack russells ... in the end it was a black patterdale who's persistence paid off! Apparently if they have a litter age 2 they dont then have probs when older... for foals i was told ideally have a foal from your mare at four or five years old and then they should be fine to breed again when older. Praps its all cobblers... my neighbour is pregnant with her first baby and she is 43 and got pregnant within 3 months of trying !! |

| A friend of mine bred her mare at 16 for a first foal, at the time I thought she was a bit old, but then a previous owner came forward and it turned out the mare was 26 and had been a affiliated show jumped, but that was after she had had 3 foals. The mare is now about 35 and still going strong, can still be ridden and still jumps like a stag! Or though she is really retired but still enjoys the out outing. |
