Just a quick one, have any of you bred your old riding mare, With older mares not coming in to season often, when they do, do you cover them at any time of the year! Thanks Glo

Millies mum was my riding mare and at 14 I decieded to breed her..she took 2 years to get in foal and then my beautiful opininated Mills was born!
I got my mare thoroughly health checked before sending her to stud, unfortunately my home girl found it to stressful and didnt take. The following year I decided to keep her at home, the first AI my vet had messed up and and she wasn't as close to ovulation as she thought..second time round, she didnt charge for the insemination, she was inseminated at home and was found in foal. I stuck to trying at times of the year that I could manage the foal..Millie was born early May, 2 weeks early.
She has subsequently fallen very easily and had 2 more lovely fillies, I suspect she just wasnt a very good match with the first stallion. |
Everyone in my life brings me happiness, some by arriving others by leaving. |

Although my lady had bred a lovely Anglo when she was 6, I loved riding her and didn't have the finances or security of suitable good facilities until she was much older to even think about breeding again. I did ask my vet for advice when she was about 18 and very fit and healthy and he said the hardest thing would be get her in foal but no problem to her or producing a healthy foal but I didn't pursue it. I may be wrong but I think there is a hormone injection that can bring the mare into to season.

As some of you know my mare has been a bit winky wonky, it's just a thought, but she doesn't come in to season at all, been reading and they say that older mares are more likely to come in to season in the autum, she has had 2 foals before though and is a very good mum. I didn't want to go down the injection route though. Haveing said that she a good companionIon to my colt, and having a barren mare is invaluable.
But the other night I had a dream that she had a foal and that has got me thinking. ( she's not in foal at mo as hasn't been covered) |

Glo, my regret is not breeding with my girl as she was sound and healthy until she died of old age at 30. It's a shame that good mares are often not bred with just because they are so good to ride. Sticking my head above the wall to be shot but I wouldn't breed with a mare with health issues unless vet advised not hereditary. |

My maiden (not Arab)15 year old went to stud and took on one covering. I had a full pre-breeding exam done prior to sending her to stud and she was in tip top breeding condition.- sadly we lost the foal at 7 months in due to an umbilical torsion. On her return to the same stallion this year she again took on just one covering - and twinned. The smallest, less developed was pinched and so far so good ..... I would say get a pre breeding exam done and see if she is in good internal condition. If she is fit & healthy take advice from your vet! |

Next year she will be put into foal (she's not a maiden mare) to breed our first second generation endurance horse :) |
