mistral became ill last night with colic. while the vet was here she showed some strange skin things. her side was briefly covered with vertical stripes like a zebra but it was just raised hair, not raised skin. She also has some lumps on her neck and shoulder like insect bites which can be felt.
She has Fenazine (pain killer) which calmed her down and she started eating again. Sjhe has passed droppings and bowel sounds on and off. Now she seems to be in pain again, despite the drug which should last at least 12 hours. She is collapsing rather than getting down to roll now but when standing she often holds hwer head on one side.
Vet will be back shortly she has taken bloods to check at the surgery.

Could she have rolled in nettles? This happened to Polka. I had an emergency vet call out, her hair was raised, hives all over her hinds and she kept collapsing at her back end and kicking like she had colic. I seriously thought I was losing her! The vets thought she had broken her pelvis and I had to make her a makeshift stable no wider than herself so that she couldn't turn or move until we got her into hospital the next morning. I slept with her that night got absolutely covered in midge bites only to wake in the morning with her bright eyed and bushy tailed saying 'Hiya Mum, where's breakfast'? Omg it was only nettle stings. Did they give a steroid injection?

| Fingers and paws crossed here for a speedy recovery. It's a good sign that she has passed droppings. Nettle stings would explain the skin reaction and the pain. |

Oh dear that sounds really frightening.
Raf had a similar but less extreme reaction to his first flu jab - we thought at first he had colic but he was just in pain and was also holding his head on one side like your mare.
So perhaps it does sound as though your mare has had a reaction to something. Maybe nettles or an insect bite/sting on her neck?
Really hope she has made some improvement now. |

Sorry everyone to report that Mistral is at peace.
Horrible decision to make but the alternative was travelling to Liverpool with a mare that might not be able to face the journey and a prognosis that was not hopeful. I'll try to explain in a couple of days. |
