When my boy was a weanling, all he got was alfa a original, Suregrow feed balancer and a bit of sugarbeet. I was paranoid about overfeeding and him growing too fast. I previously lost a yearling I bred to osteochrondosis (OCD). I wasnt taking any chances. In fact its not much different to what he gets now as a 5yo..Just Grass, Top spec feed balancer and speedibeet. Hes never been fed your conventional cereal based feeds and I plan to avoid it for as long as I can.

I was assured by the vets that he hadnt been overfed but likely because of his breeding...tb x hannoverian. Both breeds are high risk for it as they grow fast. He had been getting a cupful of stud mix from 3 months old. Vets told me to stay clear of stud/yearling mixes in future if I decided to breed again (I didnt) as they tend to make them shoot up fast.
No foal this year, my mare got in foal to twins and then refused to get back in foal (but now in foal for next year, fingers crossed). If I had a foal I would feed her Suregrow with a small amount of stud mix dampened with sugar beet morning and evening; out as grass with mum during the day and ad lib hay at night. Obviously keep an eye on the weight and stop the stud mix if the foal was gerring a bit heavy.
HGowever, I don't wean so mine are non-weanlings! As I don't sell them early they stay with mum and during the winter so that they can have a warm drink from mum every half hour or so. I have never had a problem doing this and they don't become a problem when they are separated later on as many people say. I do separate them for a few hours at a time but generally spaeking they stay with mum and those I keep eventually wean themselves. I have mothers, daughters and granddaughters.
