Hi All AL-ers!
I'm completely new to this forum stuff so do please forgive my ignorance and any errors!
As my username suggests, I am now completely horseless, (and loathing it) having had the worst equine luck the past few years I've now decided to save up and finally get the horse of my dreams (as opposed to the ones of my past that I've taken on because they needed re-homing etc. etc.)
So I plan to use the next 12 months to save up my hard earned cash (seems weird that I still have "spare cash" 10 days after being paid, it used to disappear quicker than you could blink!)
What I want to know or get a rough idea from you knowledgeable people is how much should i be looking to save up for a black arab filly or mare between the ages of 2 - 6 years old, unbroken 15hh - 15.2hh maximum?
I'm not looking for anything to dominate the showing world with (really not my thing) just something to do a bit of low level riding club stuff, hacking and most importantly be a fun, equine friend.
Am I describing a "mythical creature" and are breeders happy for their "produce" to go to such un-aspiring people?
Sorry for the rambling, just voicing some questions before I start saving and wasting anyone's time :o)

No idea on the price i'm afraid as can vary tremendously in the current market and who knows what it will be like in a year's time.
Don't be surprised if you end up with something completely different, after my original grey mare died I wanted a chestnut gelding and as you can see from my sig pics I ended up with two more greys one being a mare!
Good luck, hopefully some more knowledgeable folk will give you a price guide. |

| In the market at the moment you can get a pretty decent horse as you describe for probably anything from £800 to £2500.....depending greatly on age and experience... EXCEPT you want black !! a nice filly/mare from one of the studs breeding blacks may cost you quite a lot more, perhaps double. The prices I have put are probably about right for a youngster that has not done anything. Most studs will not mind their horses going to a non show home.. hopefully they just want a good home. I know you say you want a certain specification but there are lots of lovely purebreds that owners cant afford to keep and would love a good home for their horse. Just because horses are incredibly under priced at the moment does not mean there is anything wrong with them. However if you are heart set on having black I do understand... I only have chestnuts or palominos but there are a lot more of them !! Good luck with your saving !! |

Second that - I wanted a 15h+ grey arab schoolmaster and got a 14.1 newly broken chestnut.. He's 14.3 and a bit now though 
Prices do seem vary greatly ATM so I dont know how to advise. But good look with your search and  |

Welcome to Arabians Lines.
My advice is there is never a 'bad' colour so don't limit yourself.
Very often you'll go to look at one thing and come away with something completely different, well thats if you are anything like me.
Black horses still command quite a high price, despite their quality or lack of it. I love all colours so I'm not being racist.
You would pick a black filly/mare up for £3,000 + but please don't over look better horses for being a different colour. It costs as much to feed a bad one as it does a good one. |

Welcome to AL and good luck with your search.
I found my boy, Knighty through this forum after rehoming my last horse due to being pregnant. Even though I was offered various horses to ride, its not the same as having your own....much cheaper for a start!
I agree with everything that has already been said re price and not being too specific. Knighty is younger and smaller than I wanted yet is perfect for me and my family. I guess I didnt know what I really wanted before I found him. I feel like a teenager when ever I see him as he is just a gorgeous person and moves like a dream.
My experience is that the purchase price is not the only thing to budget for especially if like me, you havent had Arabs in the past. I have spent rather a lot on rugs as well as little things like fly masks, headcollars etc as my old mares were too big. Oh and dont forget transport costs to get the horse to you.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my ramblings, I'm really grateful.
Its true what you say though, a good horse comes in any colour & I shouldn't have a preference but its just something I've wanted since I first came across the breed many, many moons ago.
Knowing me I'll probably end up with the 3 legged donkey at the back of the barn! lol :o) |

Welcome to AL horseless. I don't think you need to worry. If you are a worthy arab (owner as you seem to be) then someone will probably be only too pleased for you tot take on at a reasonble price to a really good home. Including me!!! I am thinking £1000 might cover it.

I had a TB who was just a night mare we never clicked
when she went to her new home i was out to get a nice school
master non Tb or arab no mares
Whoops i fell for Marbon Mirage 12 year old chestnut arab mare
i loved her to pieces and she stayed with me until the end |

Hey Horseless, sounds like you will have to change your name soon! I came on just over year ago and was thinking of getting an arab.....let's suffice it to say I have now had my arab for about a year now..... |

Hi and to Arabian Lines, I have no idea of the price of black Arabs, but they do come up here and there, and of course, there are studs specifically breeding blacks.
I do think though, as others have already said, that the right one will find you, they are quite clever ya know, Carole :)

Hello,
I agree you may end up with a different colour. My dream is a liver he stunt Arab. I have a bay, a grey and a youngster who is chestnut going grey lol wouldn't change any if them.
My bay gelding s by AH Kuda who is a beautiful black.

Black beauty and the black stallion has a lot to answer for...
I don't care if a horse is blue, green or orange.... I prefer bright bays but would NEVER put colour as priority.... MANY who breeds black still thinks they can make a lot more due to colour, and breed for just that, colour, over everything else.... there a some black breeders out there that does care about conformation and so on, but there are still a large group just wanting black.
if you want black you may very well still have to pay more as some people think they are worth more... fact is black was unwanted in the dessert as they don't get rid of the heat as well as other colours, and this is the reason there wasn't many blacks about.... that has all changed there are now 1000s of black Arabs about..... price well 2 years ago I know of 2 blacks sold ridden gelding 3000 euro and backed broodmare in foal 2500 euro.... |

| people I know breeding black would ask you £3000-£5000 for a weanling filly for your needs if she was black.... where as a horse with the same conformation and possibly better pedigree would cost you about £2000-2500 if grey, bay or chestnut at other breeders stables. |

thsanks again for your replies, Debs & Misshana please don't tempt me, I know it wouldn't take much (wonder if its a certain gene thats common in horsey people).
I'm not in any hurry and like a lot of people said the horses tend to choose us.

| I have 4 beautiful Chestnuts, my favourite colour, one is a bright chestnut, another is a very dark bay, one flea bitten grey and a vari-grey. Of course, I would never have a grey, promised myself, no greys - ever. |

I have to confess having a quadruple hat trick of bad experiences with greys in my younger years which categorically put me off them for life.
Well, I blame Debs & Misshana for sowing the seed, I have sent a reply to the advert for the Black Arab mare for long term loan, understandably the lady might be put off as I live in Surrey and she lives up in Lancashire, so we shall see what fate brings. |

Typical of inpractical me, who always goes for white clothes/handbags/furniture then always manages to get it dirty!!!

Hello Horseless i am not without a four legged best friend i lost my connie Mouse a few years ago now, but have never been able to get over it.
I to am saving up for the perfect horse, my advice is never have a plan! Things change, plenty of people want a certain type, age ect of horse, but i believe we cross paths with the one.
Everybody is brilliant on here you get some great and honest advice. |
