My Jack hasnt been himself the past week. Very quiet and almost depressed looking.
A new horse went out with him and his friends on Wednesday and usually he'd be the first to flounce over to investigate and show off to the newbie to prove that although small he is the top dog!!
This time he just stood at the back of the field and didnt bother even following the others over!
Hes been MUCH less spooky, and we did a bit of longreigning at the weekend in the school and he really couldn't be bothered to move. Usually I have trouble slowing him down. Not like him at all.

Hes eating fine, weight still good, coat still shiny no signs of lameness or injury, and feet all normal, but he just looks tired and... sad Vet has examined and pulled bloods today but Im really worried given his past liver problem (which was resolved and back to normal since we moved yards) Hoping its just a low grade virus and he'll be back to his sparky self soon.

Trainer thinks it could just be the weather - but seems an extreme reaction! Has anyone else had any issues?

We have had horses like this on our yard before. Nothing really looks wrong just "not quite right". Our vet always advised 5 day Panacur Equine Guard wormer and it worked every time. Hope it's as simple as this for your lad too.

Sorry to hear this, hope it's nothing serious.
My dog sometimes has off days when he seems a bit depressed but he's generally fine again the next day.

I've had this happen with 2 of my boys - at different times. One was a viral thing, picked up in the bloods. But, the other was high infestation of worms despite being wormed regularly. But if nothing comes back from bloods, do a worm count and also ask them to check tapeworm in bloods. Happened to a friend's horse too, also wormed regularly and not kept at the same yard and that's why I asked for a poo sample to be checked when we couldn't find anything in the blood. Hope he's back to his flouncy self soon.

Thanks for your well wishes and advice. He was wormed recently however a count is something I'll look into if the bloods dont show anything.

Is he being bullied, sounds like depression to me if physical things can be ruled out?

There are warnings about at the moment for seasonal changes in plants and trees, also fungi's.

Hope he's back to normal soon, fingers crossed for him x

One of our boys has been like this - he was tested and came back positive for Cushings. It may just be the change in the weather and the change in herd dynamics though

Thanks Guys

Hopefully not Cushings as hes only 6 :S
he is usually the bully rather than being bullied - but we're keeping an eye on this. The new horse that went in last week was the first new one in a while and it seemed he already wasnt himself already by this point.

Bloodwork is due back today so I should know a bit more later on.

Apparently liver fluke is rife this year but I don't know the symptoms. Also if you have trees its worth thinking about acorns etc. Hope he is back to normal soon.

Chips was a bit "off" late summer when he was two; I put it down to acorns.

Would acorns/poisonous mushrooms show in the blood?

Bloods are back and all vet could find was a white cell shift, which she thinks means hes had a low grade virus of some sort. She recommended some Vit B garlic and Echinacea...

I'm v relieved his GGT is still normal anyway

My Arab mare has had a similar low white blood cell count for the past 2 years, hence a tendency to mud fever as the immune system is low.
It has picked up with Haemolyten from the vets. It is an all round iron based multi vitamin liquid like treacle. Minerals or lack of them can cause all sorts of problems as well. Copper deficiency can manifest itself as an iron deficiency. Selenium, zinc, copper can make a big difference to their wellbeing.Does your horse have pale membranes on the inside of the eye lid or gums?
