A little more than a month later-an update on the old guy:
In the golden light of the end of September
Ready for a grooming session
Comparing these and his first pictures i think his face and eyes have changed already

Nice to see he is well, he looks very content. Hard to think that he was almost being discarded. I to don't like to see older horses advitised for free, having said that, I almost brought a older horse in the spring. In stead I brought a youngster, the older seen it done it would have been better for me.
When I look at my old mare I don't think she looks old at 20, most of the ones advitised look 100 and past it! Is it because they are older or because they are not looked after.
I hope he is bringing you as much happiness as you are to him. Well done for going where I didn't have the nerve to. |

Thanks, glo a well kept horse at 20 is not old…with the right management, food, wormers, vet care, dentist and the right work a 20 years old horse can do pretty much anything (well not GP show jumping maybe but light to moderate work) and look great…I mean look at the pics of a 30 yrs old posted lately by an AL member…So basically yes I would say that those who look ancient do so because they are not looked after properly.I saw one recently who was skin and bones, how can people think to even advertise a horse in those conditions is beyond me. If Blue could do some light work like short hacks he would feel and look even better but I really can't put more weight on him because of his hind legs.I do take him out on walks when I can and even with his legs can he walk!it's hard for me to keep his pace.I give him Msm and Devil's claw supplements and that seems to help. When he came he was grumpy and sad,now he's even a bit cheeky! |

Pasch you are his . He is happy and content in your wonderful care. Glo, my mare at 20 was as fit as she had always been, retired to lead rein duties with granchildren at 27 still sound. She was with me from 3yrs and well looked after all her long life and made 30.5 years. |

Yes I must admit that the 30 yo horse in the other post dose look half his age. A credit to his owners, since I have had my mare I have made sure that all the basics have been covered, to keep her fit and well as she gets older. Looking at the old horses advitised it's been well worth the cost over the years to keep her in the best condition health wise.
Ari, I know 20 is not that old, and I am sure if I was a bit slimmer, I wouldn't feel bad if I was to ride her! At the mo she is doing a fab job of growing a foal for me (well for her as well).

Remember old Blue? Thanks to Facebook I found a woman who owned him 10 yrs ago.She had stopped riding him as his fetlocks were starting to show some problems and gifted him to a friend who was looking for a mature horse to keep at home for his two small girls to play with. All was well for a couple of yrs then said friend went through a divorce, had to leave the house and ex wife sold Blue to a dealer. He then went on to 2 or 3 more owners ( who kept riding him..) until I got him. Anyway, this woman and her family who had been wondering what happened to him since and feared him dead were overjoyed to hear he was alive and well and drove 4 hrs to come and see him.
Here are some pics of a 10 yrs younger and darker Blue showing off his Arab blood (70%apparently)
And pics of the reunion Still remembering the carrot trick
With the family and me
With a daughter
So many cuddles today!
Blue was so happy and he seemed to remember them all.He enjoyed being the star of the day and of course having loads of carrots! |
