Had anyone tried or does anyone use the Rambo Micklem multi bridle with their horses? I wondered if Freya would prefer it... But it's £108 to £128. Little bit of general information other than what is offered on the website would be nice. Mum is buying one for Splash when we go to Blenheim on Saturday, but Splash is clever creature and already has 4 bridles we alternate. 4 different bits you see, depending on what we're doing on the day.
I just wanted to know if anyone uses them with their Ayrabs?? xxx

What is it you would be trying to achieve by using the Micklem AnnaMaisy? I'm not meaning that rudely, just wondering what is it you're trying to solve by changing her bridle? |

I'd wait to see how she gets on at boarding school and take advice from the stunt team first.

Kath, the stunt team I am sending her to for retraining to eliminate the bucking have advised I buy one. There are up to 28 different combinations with the bridle, and they have found that many fine headed and small mouthed horses and ponies prefer the Micklem to a standard snaffle bridle. They will be using one with her while she is with them, and it would be good to let them do the transition over with her, and then I can carry on with it after she is home. There is less poll pressure and a higher sitting noseband than a standard bridle, which I have a feeling Freya will prefer. I don't want to ride her bitless, but the option would be there with the Micklem.
I know Caryn! Not long now!! xxx |

No, the noseband definately sits lower than a normal bridle, i've just been looking at the website and thats what it says, I also fail to see how there are 28 different combinations?
From what i've heard - i know a few people that use them as they are the new fad, especially for eventers - they keep the bit more still in the horse's mouth and are shaped to be more comfortable on the horse's head.
Personally i wouldnt rush out and buy one until shes back from boarding school. I do think they are good, but they are also very much in fashion at the moment - its just like all eventers used to use grackles, they now all use Micklems |

I've not seen eventers in them, they usually go with the Stubben event bridle. But thank you for that, I'll be taking Freya's stubben to 'boot camp' in that case, and although she does cross her jaw, I can't use a flash, 1. I don't like them, and 2. She gets rubs very easily. When she crosses her jaw, she'll do it out in the field, as well as being ridden... The vet said it could be something to do with how she rested in the womb in the last month before birth. Some horses do it for different reasons, obviously, but hers is an unknown reason. But hey, if she likes the Micklem, then why not? xx

I have just come back from the tack shop, and was looking at them to day, I have a flash on my mare as she likes to be in front all the time and will open her mouth and get above the bit so then I have no control, I just thought it may be another option. |

I like the nose band on them, its a bit like a drop nose band, I don't like the dee's though that are on the nose band. I like you, would be interested to hear from anyone that has used one though! |

I have one for Zizz. I use it because he has Diastemas on both sides and the lower cheek pieces meant there was no pressure on his cheeks. It is great for lunging - that's all he does these days, he doesn't throw his head at all now. I think there is a good video on you tube. As always it is only going to be as good as the hands on the other end of the reins but it is versatile and you can have several combinations of bitless or bitted I tried to get one second hand but they came up so infrequently that I ended up buying new. |

I bought one for Ari to use as a bitless bridle. I didn't like it because the leather was really thick and solid and it was very awkward to get it to fit in all the right places. It just felt and looked very clumsy and he didn't look right wearing it. Not very scientific reason, I know, but a friend was very keen to buy it off me and loved it! I went back to using the Dually headcollar with reins on the noseband rings and he was fine. Did the job ok for what I wanted which was to see whether bit/bitless was the best combination for us. |

You can get them without the D
If its jaw crossing you are trying to avoid, a grackle would be more use
Absolutley - if a horse likes a bridle go with that! Gus is in a gullet wider than he fits as he is happier so i'm all for going with what suits a horse best. I was just advising caution as they do seem to be a 'fad' - but if the bridle fits why not ;) |

She's in a NS trans-angle universal snaffle, goes lovely in it, but still crosses her jaw Can't put her in a grackle... Rubs her raw after 5 minutes, and that's with it ridiculously loose. Soooooo much stress for one little horse. Completely worth it though. Well, Blenheim tomorrow, I've got Freya's measurements, so I'll have a look around all the stands and ask a few questions, and we'll see if I can find anything suitable.
Debs, does Ali cross his jaw? Or is it the rubbing on the skin? Or getting too far in front of you? xxx |

Crosses his jaw, rolls his tongue, grinds his teeth I got the same bit as you and the first week he was great.... back to normal now though! But my instructor had a lesson on him with her chap, he looked amazing, when he works he really uses himself and his mouth is still and shut! Just depends if he wants to work though... After that lesson though he has been much much better on lunge. Now the night are getting shorter its going to be tricky to keep exercising him |

Debs, The tongue rolling, is there a reason horses do this? Only horse I've ever known to do so, is Freya! Is it just something they do? The jaw crossing and teeth grinding is what she does... All the time. As I said ^^ earlier, the vet thought it could be deeper than behaviour.
Lunged Freya yesterday, just to keep her in the working spirit, and she was a little furry angel. Didn't have any nonsense, she just did it all, with ears *****ed and always an eye on me. It was really nice, as it shows me that she hasn't lost any faith in me. She's getting good with working just from my voice as well now, which is lovely!
I won't use a rope halter with Freya, as I've said many times before, she has extremely sensitive skin. Her fly mask can leave a rub on her, and it's not close fitting because she's in-between cob and pony size, so I went for larger. Still rubs her though
Didn't buy a Micklem at Blenheim... No pony size bridles to be had, and then I spent the majority of my savings on a new waxed coat... So that was the end of my shopping day lol. She'll come through this little bump in the road, and we'll be out there competing and enjoying in no time. Complete confidence in my little Madam xxxxx |

Love my micklem. I use it bitted and bitless, depending on what we are up to. It fits Fara really well. It's a cob size and is on the smallest holes. I think it really suits her. I bought it from a friend far cheaper than what they normally cost. She had a black one AND a brown one.........more money than sense!!!! |

Does Freya do it when bitted or all the time? Ali has done it from when he first arrived, at feed times, if he is in and we go down to stables, if he is just waiting... my vet said he is releasing endorphins and would be a hard habit to break. I ignore it, thought that best! Anyone got ideas to stop this behaviour? |

All the time Debs. In the field, eating, being groomed, and then when she's being ridden or lunged/long lined. Her 'breeder' said that Sha'jeel [her papa] used to do it too, but when he was gelded, he stopped... I can't geld Freya lol xxx |

Oh it so frustrating isn't it. My dentist is coming next week so I will get him to check for whatever it was suggested on my bitting thread, Must look that up,,, can't remember what it was called Although if it stopped when gelded do you think that it is 'just' a tension thing???? |

Lol, if it is a tension thing, I'm not sure what I do with Freya!! Spay her?!?! No, lol... Maybe a calmer would work, but I'm loathe to use one. I had her magnesium levels checked by the vet when I first bought her... They were slightly above normal, which is something to do with her urinary system. Normal, but she pee's more than most and her bladder is a bit bigger than it should be apparently!
I wouldn't want to put her on a calmer because the majority contain magnesium, and I would just be upping her levels, which is something which could potentially harm her kidneys. My vet did say that monthly massages could help, but it's only a 'could' and would be another £50 on top of everything else. I'm not sure what to suggest, for me or for Ali. But if I can get an answer from the team working with her now, I'll deffo let you know what they say xxx |
