Last Friday was the 2 year anniversary that I have had Kes, we've had some real fun in that short time but what I really wanted to do with him was an endurance ride, and after Sunday's performance they'll be no stopping us now
I did the 33km Novice class, and as he completed it in <2.5 hours and had a low HR we got a Grade 1 on our first outing.
Time and time again this little horse just surprises me, he's just such a little star. Yes, this post is very self indulgent, but he deserves it!!!

Well done the pair of you! I was at CP4 and I'm pretty sure I remember you coming through, not least because he has the same colour bridle as my sister's Arab . Wasn't it a great day for it, considering the weather we had the week before?

Well done, that's fantastic. I still work in miles, so that's about 20m in 2.5 hrs - that's great, you must have worked very hard on his fitness.

Thanks everyone, Julia - without yourself and Anja I wouldn't have got this point so quickly so I am very grateful to you both

Kharidian - we did work as hard as we could but not that much really because of all the unseasonal weather we've been having, I am lucky in the fact I have got a very forward going horse combined with a naturally low HR.

Callisto - shout out next time? we met once before at Plumpton if you remember 2 years ago, and yes, it was the most perfect day with the weather :)

HOOGE achievement well done!! Fantastic photos you both look like you're having a ball, Kes looks keen. It's so nice to hear of everyones progress after the dark/dismal/windy/snowy months We're off to our 2nd ride on the 21st 32km PR as Sunny bounced around the 22km
Isn't it surprising how quickly they achieve & maintain their fitness (if only this applied to Hoomans )

Thanks everyone, as you can imagine I'm still gushing about my wonderful pony, even two days later!!

Lol Claire, isn't that just the truth, if I hadn't of whacked my leg going through a gate I would have been injury/ache free which is surprising as I wouldn't peg myself as that fit, good luck on your next ride though :)

Susi, I'm hoping to do Plumpton next, or I believe there's another ride on that weekend which is equally nice, so not sure now, but definitely something for May. Oh yes!! Well bitten, after that I want to Windsor, and then for the rest of the year I have pencilled in another 3-5. Don't want to make concrete plans just yet, I'll see how he goes :)

Thanks Sarah, you and Freddie had a good weekend too I see :)

Congratulations! I think you're very brave coping with vet gates etc, I haven't managed that yet. Our first NCR is this weekend woohoo! Glad you had a good time and Kes looks a complete star.

Thanks again for all the lovely comments :)

Liz100 - good look on your NCR this weekend, the vetting wasn't that daunting to be honest, but I was very lucky, I've had some good friends spend their time telling me what goes on/how to do things, and the person who took me I also rode with and I followed her around like a lost sheep!!

Vetting shouldn't be scary, a bit nail biting sometimes, but the vets 99% of the time helpful.

We had the funniest at Kings Forest this year when we did the FEI 1* in the snow. The vet gate at 32k Cinny got a B for action. This was partly because I was trotting her up (husband, top crew wasn't there and my friend crewing had a naff knee) and partly because every 4 strides I was nearly landing on my nose, sliding on the compacted snow. The vets were also snuggling up in her rugs ;)

Liz when you do a GER just tell them it's your first vetting and the vets and the vet writer will look after you :)

I thought the vetting was ok, I watched other people before me and followed the instruction's as and when, I saw 2 different vets on Sunday and as it was my first GER I did tell them that just to make sure I was doing the right things at the right, honestly, it was easy :)

Brilliant - well done, both of you! Lots more pics please, for the rest of the season! Love Kes! Please could you tell me his breeding? (Arabian Anorak alert!). What a beautiful head, and just look at the hind leg action! Eat your hearts out, dressage divas with Big Proper Horses! Ten years after the event, I'm still in a flounce after a Well Known Dressage Rider watched me and Ryazan (RIP) schooling (enter at A at ordinary leap/bounce!) and said "Hmmm . . . quite nice action - but of course, you would do so much better with a proper horse". When I politely enquired what a "proper horse" was, it turned out to be a German Warmblood. One over 16.2hh. Oh. Bad luck for me, since I can't ride one side of anything that is that big, or isn't an Arab. TB, Welsh, or mix n match of all/any of the above!

Thanks Zooscat, hopefully we can have a go at some dressage too at some point

There will be lots more pics don't worry, Kes is very photogenic, unlike moi

He is by Ansata Qasim (owned by Judith Forbis, currently standing in Kuwait I believe), out of Amira Al Noor, currently at Tucana Arabians. Kes looks very much like his half brother who is just starting out as a breeding stallion I think, Star of Qasim'

Edited to add, Kes' reg name is OES ibn Al Qasim if you want to see him on AllBreeds, feel free to anorac, I do all the time

I happened to be there to see Kes's initial vetting and, apart from him looking - shall we say - rather eager to go, you and he didn't put a foot wrong! So pleased for you!

Also, entirely to Carole's credit hes really come on over the last 9 months. Although he is really good natured, he is a very quick little horse and its taken some nerve and very tactful riding to get him to this point. So public congratulations to you!

Owww shucks folks

Thanks Sam, it was great to see you again, I was hoping we would catch up, if only briefly!!

Julia, thank you - it's been the combination of many things, mostly it's being in the correct yard/ environment, I would never have got anywhere in the place I initially kept him at, totally unsuitable for his type/ breed and my chosen discipline, that's why I've achieved so much in such a short time, sounds awful to say but it's true. Of course having encouragement and knowledge from others got me on the ER ladder so quickly, but the result I got, well that was him
