Hi all, I just had to post this, so many people including so called horse lovers are posting disgusting jokes about this on FB! Am I really the only one who is sickened to the stomach at the thought that there is a chance that unwittingly I may have eaten a lasagne which contained horse meat. I am horrified at the thought, I could no more eat horse than I could dog or cat and what gets to me the most is that the choice has been taken away from me and I may have basically been force fed it How can people find this situation funny?? and yes I know the argument that other animals so why not horses but I don't believe horses are treated as humanely at slaughter as cattle from what I have read, and by the time they arrive there they are usually in a sorry state, I find the jokes very hurtful and can't find anything remotely funny about it

I dont know about UK slaugther houses, but I cant agree with you about horses being mistreated in Danish, German, Dutch or Belgian slaugtherhouses.

I agree people should have the chance to choose, but that said this country allows halal meat to be sold unlabeled too... which is worse in my kitchen, as those animals has had a horrible death.

I think you are taking things far far to close to heart, Im a horse person and would find a joke silly, some would make me smile, but I as other horsey friends are not doing that because we don't love horses, you can't link the two...

George I am one of those that think ALL animals are the same in the face of slaughter so I don't understand the outcry about eating horse meat when you eat beef, lamb or pork.(I don't eat any meat.)
Be assured that cattle are rarely slaughtered humanely (humane slaughter being an oxymoron really) you only need to see a few videos on the Net to realize that (and I am talking about the "official"videos, not the ones about abuse). The only reason why you may find horse videos harder to watch is because knowing horses you can read them and the way they feel easily, something you might not be able to do so well with other animals you don't spend a lot of time with.So their panic and fear is more evident to you than if it were a cow for example.
If I ate meat, what I would be more worried about would be the horse meat containing harmful stuff like Bute...
I haven't read any jokes on Fb so can't say much about them, maybe it was supposed to be black humour?
Sometimes to make a joke about something is a way to take out the drama of it?

Pash I agree about most... however medicines MUCH worse then BUTE is actually allowed in cattle and other farm animals, so I cant see this massive panic about potential BUTE in horse meat (besides samples are taken when the animal is dead and since a horse needs to hang a while to be tender results are back before its cut and sold ei. BUTE and similar affected horses will show up in these tests and the meat will be used for pet food instead of human consumption.

I couldn't watch any video of any animal being slaughtered, I must be a bit of a wimp really as I hide my face and stick my fingers in my ears when watching big cats or anything hunting on nature programmes I can watch gory horror films with humans being slaughtered though....no problem!! I am just sickened by the way people can tread on others feelings, I really think some people put them on to get a reaction....not that I would give them the satisfaction of rising to it. I don't think I'm taking it too much to heart because it "is" in my heart, "I don't want to eat horse meat" and up until a few weeks ago I could categorically state that I never have and never will but somebody else has made that choice for me, being lucky enough to be born in Britain I thought that choice was mine. Sorry for straying a bit but I still say it's disgusting to make jokes about it!

George...with you on that one! I don't eat that kind of food anyway, as mostly fish and veggie. However, for horse to be found in the UK food chain is very disturbing. I think the whole issue is that the UK is up in arms because horse is not generally on the menu. Jokes are on FB....mostly in bad taste. The problem is we are emotionally attached to our equines. If we kept cows, pigs and other farm animals in the same vain.....?

Ok littlearabians.....heavens above we may as well all give up eating. Unless you are totally vegan, it works, for some. Where do we draw the line on what to eat? I try and buy sustainable produce but I can only rely on product information were it comes from that is true information. Does a carrot scream when its pulled from the ground?? Of course fish suffocate, but its the only way I can get a good source of vital nutrients. I have to find my protein from somewhere. I don't store iron in my body, and red meat is not an option. Your comment is noted.

Jokes always have and always will be part of the more dramatic events in life, they are a coping mechanism which can prevent the seriousness of a particular situation taking over. The trouble is what is a simple joke to one person can cross the line for another, but to stop humour would make the world a much more difficult place to be these days.

The point of the current situation is that choice has been removed from the equation, but I am totally with littlearabians here with regard to the lack of labelling of halal meat which I find personally just as worrying.

I would never want to eat horse meat, end of!
Yes I eat meat and I know some will want to rant about the hypocrasy in my statement, but it is my statement, I don't care if you agree or disagree. I don't eat processed stuff really so hopefully I haven't....
If someone else wants to eat horse that is their decision, but if you are buying something labelled as beef then that is what it should be.
There is so much rubbish in our foods that it is probably the least of our worries....
My warped sense of humour though finds (most of) the jokes amusing...

I didn't mean it as such... 1 in 7 things written in debate forums or texts are misunderstood.

It just annoys me tremendously when people think they are being kind to animals by calling themself "veggies" but still eat fish... Apart from that I really cant care less what people chose to eat, I eat what I like, and I would dare say I am brought up to try anything once... If I like it I will keep enjoying it.

Regarding the horse jokes I haven't posted any this time round but I really didn't think for one second that people couldn't see the irony and black humour in them, I NEVER thought anyone would find them as offensive as you feel they are.

Debs: If someone else wants to eat horse that is their decision, but if you are buying something labelled as beef then that is what it should be........... couldn't have said that better myself, the problem to me is NOT that its horse meat in the burgers/ lasagna/ whatever, my problem is we should all be able to TRUST that what we buy as cow is not a horse nor pork with red dye as has happened in the past.... the latter being a worse problem for many people due to religion.

Littlearabians, I haven't read or seen any of your jokes as I haven't been on here for a while, I was not aiming my post at any individual I was just referring to the ones doing the rounds on FB at the moment.

Too right Judith and its more widespread than you imagine. I laugh at the government saying they suspect an international criminal gang is to blame, how convenient. I know the name of the gang, they're called 'The Meat Industry' Believe me, trust them and the other gang 'The Dairy Industry' as far as you can throw them. They don't care what they feed you so long as its more profit.

Re the jokes, I saw one and it was quite witty, but the jokes are the least of my concerns tbh.

Maybe people wouldn't make jokes if they saw the way the horses are transported in countries like Poland to slaughter. I could post photos but being horse lovers I am sure everyone on here can imagine.

This is fraud on a massive scale, regardless of individual sensitivities. I would not choose to eat horse meat either, but I have found some of the jokes amusing - mostly the ones which are not always instantly obvious.

Well, tricky subject!!

I don't have a problem with the jokes. My first reaction to hearing that horsemeat was in beef lasagne was a bit 'told you so'. I think anyone who eats processed meat is playing with fire anyway. They might as well just call it meat lasagne, or meat burgers. Buy your meat from a reputable butcher who you have taken time to get to know and trust.

The one concession I have recently made is to buy organic milk. I believe it tastes better but that might be purely psychological. What I am sure of is that the withdrawal period for any medicines is much longer and the cattle feeds are not gm modified

I agree about the halal meat. I hate the fact that it isn't labled as such.

I agree with quarabian on this. After watching a program on chicken farmers and the pressure supermarkets put on them to produce cheap meat, I have been really careful where I buy meat from. The slaughtering of animals is just a small part of their life so in my mind their welfare through out their life is as important. I wouldn't choose to eat horse meat but I do choose to buy from suppliers (local farms and supermarkets such as waitrose and co-op who use sustainable business models) who I trust. I avoid buying cheap or processed food as I don't know what it really is. Its a pain as feeding my family is more expensive and time consuming but worth it to me.

As for the jokes, I have only heard a couple on Fb which I found amusing not offensive. I find sexist and racist jokes offensive and just ignore them as by reacting, I'm buying into their egos.

Goldenmane.... do you honestly think we don't know how things are in the real world, Ive seen several horses slaughtered...

As I said before because you smile at a joke, or make on on your facebook then it doesn't mean you don't know what happens in the world, nor that you don't LOVE horses... the best we can do for any animal is making sure they get a quick end to things, if more people ate horses no horse would be suffering on live transports (which the last 5 years have become A LOT better).

The jokes are something that happen all the time people i seem to recall made jokes about Michael Jackson and Whitney Huston and i'm sure they had people that love them.
I haven't personally posted jokes on my fb but just last night i ate beef stir-fry and i did ask if it was defiantly beef and not horse. But in no way to i not love my horses!!

I have a very broad outlook on life and yes i do think the fact that people have been eating horse with out there knowledge is terrible! And very disturbing, but most people don't have any sort of idea what is in there processed food. That is sadly the world we live in, where people want cheap easy food and people see meat as meat, welfare for transported animals like Littlearabians said has in the last five years got much better although in my own view i think it has a long way to come. Maybe with this publicity welfare for meat animals weather that be chickens, pigs, cattle and horses will improve.

Responding to Fee's accusation about the meat industry being criminals I can answer in part as I am part of the meat industry.

As a meat producer I do care. I not only care about how my sheep and lambs are looked after and their right to be out in fields, have relationships with each other and choose what they eat and where they sleep at night. I also care about the quality of meat that they produce and that it is chemical free.

To say that the meat industry is criminal is slander. It is a personal opinion. Ill treatment of animals in the meat industry is criminal and I deplore it. Mis labeling of foods to deceive consumers is criminal. I am sure the criminals will be prosecuted in due course.

Sorry that this is off topic George, I didn't start it, I responded to an accusation that was false (in my opinion)

Quarabian i respect all meat producers that care about there animals and treat them in kindness, i studied an agricultural college in Suffolk that breed sheep the lambs are then sent for slaughter but the live stock teacher ALWAYS!!!! Ensured the lambs were well looked after fantastically, and we were always taught to treat all the animals with respect now think what you may of students being taught to respect meat animals but on my course it was a whole unit! Along with welfare of meat animals. Sadly bad stories make good news and you will never hear the stories of farmers that care about there animals from day one, because it wont sell papers somebody beating the s**t out of a turkey will.
