when i saw folly's add last year, she was described as stunning.....hahahahahahahahaha as you can tell im not shallow
she clearly is not stunning (yet..) and stunning is not a word i think that should have been used to describe her.....but i can see what she could become. and if her dad is anything to go by i will be quite happy.

I HATE the word stunning..... I HATE it with a passion!!!!.... I have seen many youngsters looking like the back end of an elephant but STILL in the sales advert being described as STUNNING... If I am looking to buy I scroll past adverts with stunning, as its often something people say as there is nothing else worth saying.
BUT.... The Arab is a versatile horse that comes in many shapes, sizes and looks, what many find being modern and stunning some others will not like... and what some find 'plain Jane' (great didn't know I was both plain, boggs, and doe in this country) others like, this needs to be respected and this makes it difficult to have a 100% breed standard... one thing that annoys me is the show classes "most classic head" NO they're not the most classic head, they are won by the most modern dishy faces.... explain that?????
I do NOT see anything wrong in using words as quality and conformation... after all you might that way find suitable people who CARES about these things but not just looking for something stunning... I sold 2 boys last year BOTH being SUPER paces, having GOOD conformation, FANTASTIC temperaments... but stunning NO I'll NEVER use that word in an advert, not even if I was selling seahorses. |

Years ago there was a programme called Essex wives don't know if anyone saw it but there was a cringy moment in one series where two women where filmed going about there lives, one of them I happen to know, well they were getting ready for a night out clubbing and they were standing in front if the mirror posing then both at the same time said "stunning" obviously about themselves how pathetic I thought I remember roaring with laughter at it so that is one other reason I don't use the word ever. |

I think any horse owner is entitled to classify their horse as stunning, after all by definition "stunning" is a matter of opinion. I think it is nice that people see the best in their horse and I do not consider it misleading in an advert as a buyer can make their own judgement on what they consider to be stunning.
I agree with parkevillenerog it is more misleading to state HOYS STANDARD/POTENTIAL/PROSPECT etc as this is a statement regarding confirmation, ability etc.

Stunning is a big word to live up to if your a horse. It implies you have made it in the world....done it all seen it all. Another word is 'has potential'....yes in the right hands...maybe.
Non of my horses would be considered stunning, but in my eyes they tick all the boxes.
I suppose advertisers think the more dramatic the wording of their advert makes a sale more promising and dosen't actually reflect the horse honestly. |

Perhaps its like babies.... my god there are some ugly ones ...but I expect their mums think they are gorgeous........the times I have had to lie and say "oh how lovely" when I really thought "poor ugly mite" I agree the stunning word is overused and wrongly applied to many horses.... |

LOL, yes - in my job, as you can imagine, I have to say that every baby is "gorgeous", and "what a lovely name" to the most bizarre made-up or uniquely spelt monikers!
A few women are refreshingly honest - one African lady said of her scrawny slightly premature boy "he looks like a monkey". He was genuinely cute and gorgeous though!

Only on AL can we go from sales advert wording to babies and selective breeding My totally unhorsey OH quite often laughs at sales ads which even he can see are insanely inaccurate or with stupidly unflattering pics although most of these are on a local website. Our favs are scrawny 'traditional' cobs being described as stunning and show quality when in truth they have poor confirmation - don't get me wrong, I love cobs but I also know a quality horse when I see it (or at least think I do).
Once you have made your purchase then I think its quite normal to wear rose tinted specs and truly believe your horse is stunning. Horses, like us deserve unconditional love and to be judged on more than just looks x |

'Stunning' is certainly an overused word but so is the word 'there' ( at least 3 times in this thread), when people mean 'their',the two word's have completely different meanings. I'm not even going to start on the random use of apostrophes!!! Sorry!!!!!!!!
I know, I sound like a pedantic old bat, usually I just go with it.... but I have had a bad day ...sorry people !! I am atrocious at spelling myself BTW so I know , Pot-Kettle-Black... I will shut up at this point!
Back to Caryn's original points...I couldn't agree more!!!

OMG! I hadn't read the whole thread when I posted and now have...what a coincidence ...it seems that I am not the only one in 'pedantic old bat mode'!!!! I agree Mrs Vlaqc 'a horse's confirmation' also conjures the weirdest of images for me too!

When we bought my daughters first pony the seller had another lady before us to look at her, although she is a perfect lead rein pony the viewer didn't buy her as she said she was ugly!!!!I was amazed at this but I am sooo glad for our sake as she is fantastic, and I wouldn't call her stunning but certainly very nice conformation and very pretty,so must be very different ideas of ugly etc to different people. |

Could I please join the pedantic old bat club? Shall we call ourselves POBs?
I'm guilty of typographical errors (and just not caring enough to fix them half the time) and I do realise that it's an eyesore to look at. I blame it on the too-little time I allow myself for posting. I care about it when it counts though.
Meantime, I too have done the "count the stunnings" on a page game. One of my favorite ways to pass the time in the tea room at the yard.
By the way, I do happen to mix the spellings of certain words that have one spelling in the UK and another in the USA. I am happy to replace z's with s's...but I refuse to add in extra u's |

OOO, can I join the POB's.
I'm massively irritated by the there/their, your/you're, to/too/two etc, and any spelling mistakes; but mostly I'm irritated if its my error
The big one for me is the double negative .... drives me bonkers.
But I don't mind the American way of missing out the letter u, its quite cute, but, really, 'quitting'? that's not a word, it just isn't a word. However, we do have to allow the Colonies some freedom to put their own stamp on their identity
Borleybird - He he, Advert to babies ..... to outrageous provoking of Americans?

Beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder, I had a foreign gentleman interested in one of my colts, I sent him a picture, he rang me back and told me that he was not interested as this one was ugly and did I have any pretty ones??? Heres the picture.

Oh no, after my confirmation mishap, I will never be allowed to be a POB. Serves me right for posting whilst pretending to pay attention to OH. Most frustrating especially as I have dumped a guy in other past for his appalling text spelling.
Pashon, I would be more than happy with being ugly like your little boy.
