Paris gaining weight, states today's update:
.....and the sun came out and the southerly wind blew and the ground dried up and the long awaited spring grass has now arrived :-) This morning was cool and a bit cool in rural Herefordshire. The volunteers at the sanctuary today were Astrid, Martin and Lesley and Amy and also Pete very briefly. With so many hands the work was soon completed. All the oldies are loving the grazing now and the hedges are bursting into leaf which adds long awaited variety to their diets too. (...)
The rest were good as gold to do despite a brisk wind blwoing things about and lambs scuttling around the other side of the fence to the pony meadow. We've begun to cut the haylage amount down tonight for the ponies and Paris too, given she weight taped 3 weeks ago at 438 kg and tonight weight taped 456 kg.. she's fat! I'm going to gradully reduce the size of her feed s now for the summer and try to get her to level out around the 445 mark. She's non the worse for her 'adventure' from yesterday thank goodness.
Yesterday's episode, described here:
Paris gave us a huge scare this afternoon. Thank god we went early to 'do' stuff. She was lay flat out, sleeping, so we initially thought, but Amy said she'd go check to see if she was OK. Good bloomin job too, Paris was 'stuck' because her rug had gone back on her chest and shoulders almost acting like a straight jacket and she was pinned to the ground by it underneath her!! It was a heck of hjob to get the buckles undone but once I did and pushed her up on her sternum up she came and that culprit long sided rug was banished. So she's back in her short sided one with the high cut on the breast fastenings...a much safer style for her and we'll certainly be investing in another lightweight version of this rug for her wardrobe post haste. Trustee Ann said that when she got back to the yard around 1pm Paris was out grazing and fine but by the time we arrived at just about 3pm she was prostrate. She's absolutely grand now, though was stiff as heck on her off side hock - the leg that had suffered damage prior to her coming to our care - but she most likely had 'pins and needles' in it from having it under her for about an hour. We left her rugless for about an hour as it was warm enough and let her stretch and move about and when we went to fed her she was her normal self, trotting at Larry and snapping teeth at him to get away from her tea so all was very well indeed!! and she ate her tea this evening just fine. She was snoozing in the shelter of her little barn when we came away. All is well with our glorious old lady once more.. phew!!

A scary episode this morning, that turned out not to be serious, after all:
How much blood does it take to make a grey look like a victim of massacre? about a teaspoon full is the answer. Thanks Paris for scaring me daft this morning! That feeling of 'Oh God :-( ' when you see red on white is such a gut churner... So I gently brushed off all the dried blood ( gallons of it!) and searched for the slashed veins, torn artery, I even inspected under her tail in case she was hemorrhaging... ummmm nothing! phew! a closer inspection while she was slurping and chomping her breakfast revealed bugger all.. a couple of tiny scratches and the evidence of such was a snow storm of white Arab hair along the fence where she'd been raking herself along the hawthorn hedgerow last night ! For her trouble she got her feet trimmed and with help from Sam she was not allowed to be the Diva. Sam said 'Look at her face, she's sulking because she doesn't want to you to pick her feet up' it's true, when she was hassled a bit about it up they came no trouble and she's now sporting two nicely trimmed front feet! it took all of about 5 mins for both, not exactly taxing for her either! You can see such a difference in her hooves, she's been here 9 months now and the quality of the horn growing down ( about half way) is far far better than that of her previous life and the angle of what is growing is far better than that of which we are trying to get gone. Mel Richards ( one of our trimming team) said that by the time Paris is 32 she should have superb hooves :-)

There is nothing so clever (or beautiful) as an Arabian It's a shame Paris cannot write a book about her life. |
