Hello all. I've just quickly come on this morning to clarify the situation with the old arab mare Viuga ( known as Paris) Paris has now been signed over to the reg charity www.emwuk.org.uk by all parties who had a vested interest in her. The dratted postal service has fouled up again and her intake form along with passport has not arrived despite being posted last weekend, not the first time we've had trouble with documents going missing. This is not an issue as we can travel her (when she is fit to make the journey) on welfare grounds without a passport to hand unless it turns up in the meantime. Paris is currently being fostered, has been seen by a veterinary surgeon, and cared for in South Wales where she wil remain for the time being to enable her to gain strength and condition before she will move to sanctuary in Herefordshire in due course. Once she arrives our veterinary surgeons will be asked to do a thorough examination of her and determine the cause of her very poor condition if possible. Given she is a very old lady and not all horses are destined for extreme old age we will judge her quality of life very carefully but for now she is bright and eating well and has a spark of life hard to extinguish. When her foster carer deems her ready for the journey we may need to ask for some help as our own towing vehicle has a less than happy gearbox and is not up to such a long journey.. I hope you will bear with us on news of Paris as these are very hard and testing times for equine welfare. We intend to produce a weekly blog of her condition as a record and a graph of body condition but that is the future and for now she is fine, albeit a mare with a body score of 0 (zero) (assessed from photographs so only an estimate) but she has never been a fat mare since she first came to light some time ago. For those who do not know this charity you can read more here www.emwuk.org.uk We are on Facebook @Equine Market Watch Sanctuaries UK or of course via the charity Commission, our reg number is 1114700 and we are always happy to answer questions via e-mail emw@emwuk.org.uk I hope this allays fears and answers questions pending. elaine EMW-UK |

I would just like to say Paris is here with me.I have read through all the comments and am not interested in getting into a debate. She has been here 2 weeks and in my eyes has started improving. She is on good grazing, fed the correct feed, has been wormed, had blood done that came back fine. She is a very sweet, happy mare, her feet and teeth will be done this week and we hope she will continue to improve. In my opinion this mare deserves a chance,I have been around animals long enough to know when a horse has had enough and it's time to say goodbye,I don't see that in Paris. What we have decided to do on the vets recommendation is to see if she picks up in the next few weeks,if she does then all well and good if not then yes we might have to make the decision to let her go.But at present she canteres up to the gate to have her feed and apart from being underweight she seems happy. So please don't judge what we are doing,I would never leave an animal suffer to save my own feeling. Paris will have every chance to improve here where she is safe and very well cared for,if this doesn't happen then my vets will advise accordingly. Thanks for all your concern for her,she has to be one of the sweetest mares I have met. |

Thanks for all the positive comments,I will say again Paris is our main concern and while she is willing to fight and continues to improve we will give her every opportunity to live. This mare has amazed me at how strong willed she is,she has to be. You just know when the time is right to let an old horse go and I strongly believe that this isn't Paris's time. She is so happy and alert and loves her food,I still think she deserves a chance. As I said we have set a dead line when we will re-assess the situation for a final time,if she has made a big improvement we will continue to help her,if not then we will have to make the decision to let her go.She has been measured and we know what we are aiming for in that month.I know opinions will vary but I have done this before with great results, recently I lost my own 36y.o mare who had no teeth and couldn't eat grass or hay,we fed her the same diet as Paris is on and she had a fantastic quality of life until the day she died,Paris will not be allowed to suffer that I promise. |

This is the photo posted on EMW's facebook:
EMW posted this update, there:
STATEMENT AND LOG REGARDING PARIS -AGED ARABIAN MARE. There will be an update on the condition of Paris later this week. this photo was taken on intake to foster care. the mare is now completely under the Equine Market Watch Sanctuaries (UK) ownership and in the care of waleshorsevets.com. The mare has a superb care plan in place and is being monitored carefully. We are aware that concerns have been raised regarding her advanced emaciation and quality of life. Quality of life is taken very seriously by this charity and we firmly believe that one day too soon is better than one day too late but in this case the vets and we think this old mare deserves a good chance. This log will be updated weekly. Should her condition give cause for concern or she fail to gain the expected amount of condition in the period set by the care plan then she will be humanely destroyed in her foster care and not come to sanctuary which is what we hope will be the case. This week she has been put onto Simple System Horse Feeds and NAF supplements, will be having a full dental check and farriery.

Thank goodness she is now being well cared for and really hope she improves.
Not being negative but bit concerned she appears to be standing on bare concrete (hope it it rubber) and bedding looks a bit sparse?? If she gets down and with her very bony protrusions, she is likely to cause trauma injury to herself in her skeletal condition

God bless her little heart, she does look happy enough in herself. Let's hope she picks up to enjoy what remains of her life be that weeks, months or years to come.

you see this is one thing - that mare has obviously not seen a farrier for a very very long time. I hope that the weigh in is positive |

I've just read on FB that her weight had increased from 307kg to 340kg - I think that is in about 3 weeks! If she can do that relatively easily (being fed Simple System food I think), how the h@ll had she got to a body score of zero before being fostered by EMW?
