here is Indie almost 2 yrs old , yesterday i sat charlie's saddle on him and he didnt bother, so i thought today i would try the roller,, just loose at 1st, then did it up one hole at a time,, until it was girth tight,, did he worry,, nope
so i left him wearing it for over and hour while i was trimming back brambles around his field,, he just carried on grazing as if nothing was different to usual,,
what a relaxed young man he is,, even played with charlie while wearing it,,
Excellent People often don't think about doing it slowly and carefully when it comes to rollar's, they just stick them on once and say 'job done'. I don't think Kes had ever had a rollar on but went straight to tack with a tightened girth. Consequently I have a horse who I have to girth slowly or Mr Nippy comes my way!!
i agree kes,, i did the same with my girl tosca, i think the problem with using a saddle the 1st time is that if the horse is unhappy, fidgeting, people just do the girth up as fast as possible, so that the saddle doesnt fall off, or spook the horse, causing the pinch, , never mind if we had taken longer to prepare the job would be easier and safer for us and our horses,,
it will be a few months of roller training, and doing groundwork in it, before i even think about girthing with a saddle and another year after that before he has his 1st adult rider,, my friends small childern have asked if they can sit on him ,, so thats the plan for my little lad, long slow and steady progress,,
