Looking at some show pictures and a lot of arabs have very fine mane and tails and not a lot of forelock. I know you are supposed to leave them naturel but in reality do they get pulled, not looking to start a row just curious as I think Kirstie must be part hairy cob with the amount of forelock and a really thick mane she has. not that I am complaining as last year she rubbed it all out.

Mary, I think they all vary as my old boy has a really thick mane and a long tail but boo on the other hand has quite a fine mane and did used have a really long tail but it has gradually broken off. We have Six pure breds on our yard and they do all differ.

I must admit i wish Boo had more forelock, his is quite thin. I never come his mane or his tail only for shows and its still not great.

I wish cookie had a lovley long forelock but its quite thin , her main isn't as long and thick as it used to be as she loves a bit of mutual grooming but she has a long thick tail.

I have a 4yr old pure bred. His mane and tail are so thick they make him too hot and itchy. He also suffers from a bit of sweet itch and the excessive hair seems to make this worse. Last year I thinned out his mane & forelock with a solo comb and will do it again for this summer as soon as it get's warmer again.
I hate doing this but it certainly makes him feel better.

Varies from horse to horse and definitely runs in families.

Taz (Moataz al Nakeeb) my SE stallion has one of the longest forelocks I have ever seen; he also has a long, wavy mane. Both are silky and wavy rather than bushy and look magnificen. On the other hand I have several mares of very similar breeding and they don't have a lot of mane and forelock so it certainly isn't to do with feeding etc.

Out of our 4, both the boys have longer forelocks than the girls. Nush has a wonderful long fine mane, but her forelock is fluffier and about 4 inches long.

Same thing happens with the quarter horses. Some have little forelock and never need any trimming, others grow a thick bush of a mane.

Both my boys had long thick manes and tails but as they have got older they seem thinner, even though they are in fantastic condition, bit like my OH.

I have a mare, no relation, who also has a really long forelock but not quite as long as Taz's, her's stops at the top of her nostrils. Sadly all the rest have "normal" length forelacok so not something in the water here!!!

I haven't used Taz on any of my mares but it will be interesting to see what he produces from the mares not so blessed in the hair department.

Here are a couple of pictures of two of ours who are half sisters, one has a lovely forelock as a youngster and a full tail, the other a very thin tail and a shorter lot of hair at the front. They both have lovely manes though. At shows the middle picture shows the forelock is still long, but the use of Cowboy Magic keeps it very tightly together to stop it blowing across the face and hiding the eyes.

Well for the last couple of days i have noticed that Kirstie has been standing on her tail and pulling huge chunks out its amazing how quickly that it can go from being thick to not. It is still really thick at the top its breaking part of the way down. That will teach me for saying I wanted her forelock thin and wispy. Hair cut tomorrow

I think it's like everything it varies from horse to horse

as with humans, some people have lovely thick hair others have thin hair, it's just a matter of genes and luck haha

My 3 year old has hardly any forelock mores the pity. He has rubbed out a lot of his mane and tail in previous years so I'm applying Nettex this year to try and stop it. Maybe his forelock will grow back a bit hopefully!
