My friend has been doing some research on our new boy, his sire was a TB stallion called Astral Master (I found him on the Racing Post's stallion guide - don't think he was much cop as a racer, but his dam did quite well!) and the dam was an Arab called Silvinda which I haven't found any mention of (although apparently HW Silvinda is a Crabbet GELDING!).
Does anyone know if there is an arab mare called Silvinda?

and allbreeds says she has had a foal by Astral Master called Master Fettler in 1993.

Astral Master was by Master Spiritus - I have known some lovely horses by him (quite sharp)

thats interesting but cant be our boy as that would make him 19yrs old and he is only 13yrs old, hope he isnt that one or he is a lot older than we thought.

gosh your good at this Pashon :) but still nothing showing as being 13yrs from that breeding, going to have him DNA tested, just waiting for the kit to arrive so we can get it done, but we only have him on loan(at the moment but can buy him and think I will as he is fabby) and his owner is having it sent to her house and she will take it up in 3 weeks when she comes to visit.

You're welcome. Do you have a vet visiting who could possibly age him? There seem to be no progeny after 1995, and all record of Astral Master dissappears at this date too.

vets up here wont age a horse after its 12ish as they say you cant give an acurate age by the teeth.

I am not bothered if he is older as he is here now and isnt going anywhere, he is exactly what we were looking for as a first horse for Jemma and is fit and healthy, and I am not ageest against the veterans.
An other couple of photos of them from the last couple of days and their first ridden sessions since we got him home.

and from yesterday, they look like they are really clicking already.

Your vets are silly, surely they can say 'over 15' or under 25 lol!! Mine certainly can although they would never say 'exactly 17'. Or may agree with a horses presumed age. Anyways it doesnt really matter, he looks a lovely boy and if he is exactly what you are looking for then he is perfect. Nowadays 19 is not old and he has years left in him yet!!!
As far as DNA testing is concerned, I think my first one was 1996 and broodmares were not tested, obviously deceased parents could not be!! It may be the AHS will accept his breeding bearing in mind he is pre DNA? He is a gelding after all and will not pass on his genes but it would be nice to have his paperwork. Have you tried all the TB registrations so that you can prove his sire was registered as breed stock? Silvenda produced a purebred in 1990 so she must have been entered as breedstock although almost certainly not DNA'd.

Pashon, hadnt thought about the possibility of the dam/sire not being DNA tested, as its not something I have ever had to think of doing before, but thanks for pointing that wee point out. We will have to wait see what happens.

Whatever his name or age, he's stunning and looks a lovely horse.

However must be rather weird your horse not being who you though he was

Just caught up with this drama - wow a bit of an age difference. But he's looking absolutely fantastic no matter what his age. Wonder how this all happpened (mistaken identity). I've always been rather partial to him as he's a bigger version of Sammy ;)

he is a stuning boy and I love him to bits, but my main issue is that we were looking for something younger than the ones we already had at home so that they could get an earier life as Jemma(my daughter)wanted to do more competing and I didnt feel it was fair to ask it of the veterans that we had here, so I went looking for a younger horse, I feel guilty now that I have found out his true age as there is no way I would ask a 19yr old to do what we want our new horse to do, we had him on loan with a view to buy and have been paying for him in instaulments, but also would not have agreed to pay the amount we have if I had known his age.
He is not easy, he has quirks and at the moment is actualy away having some retraining done which is costing me £140 a week, is it fair to ask a 19yr old horse to change it ways? and is it likey to work is an other question, so I am probably just wasting my money.
I am gutted and feel like I have been taken for a mug, by someone who I thought of as a friend as I did not get him from a stranger but from someone I had known a number of years.

Scotland, Aberdeenshire, but he came to me from Glasgow, and previous to that he was in Lestershire, so Cyd has been all over the UK in his 19yrs.

I just want to put a word in for golden oldies. Lenamore at the age of 19 competed in Olympics, finishing 29th in the eventing. My old pony was still going strong at 25, competing regularly in pony club polo having just retired from show jumping. Owning any horse is a gamble and I am sure we all know of relatively young horses who have been retired or pts due to injury.

None of this however would negate the disappointment of finding out he isn't what you were expecting. I hope you can find the right solution as he looks gorgeous.

Cyd is going to be staying with us for the rest of his day, and joining our other veterans, seem to be collecting them.
His owners have relinquished all rights to him and handed over full ownership to me.

Borleybird, I have no issues what so ever with veterans as we already have 2, an 18 and an 19yr old, the 18yr old is still in full work and jumps and hacks on a regular basis, but I was looking for a younger version of her to give her an easier life, hence why we got Cyd, to find he was older than her was very upsetting as we would never have gone and tried him let alone taken him home at that age as he was not what we were looking for. But now that he is here he will be going no where, untill its time to go to Rainbow Bridge.
MY daughter and Cyd went to dressage today and were second in their first prelim test.

I'm so glad your keeping him and guessed/hoped you would from some of your earlier posts. Sorry if my previous post came across as criticism as that was not my intention. I certainly am not in a position to pass comment as I re-homed my last mare i had on loan because she didn't enjoy dressage and at 17 I felt it unfair to ask her to change.

no worries Borleybird :)

hitting a bit of a brick wall trying to trace who issued his original passport, have tried AHS, and Weatherbies, who have a bay gelding born the same year as Cyd by that stallion but not called Master Fettler. Its called Master Sprite
