I noticed grey horses have a different smell compared to bays,chestnuts and other coloured coats.It's especially noticeable when they sweat.I wouldn't go as far as a friend who says they are smelly,I would say it's a bit more sour.I was wondering what is the reason,is there a different quality of the skin,the hair?Anyone knows?

We have 3 greys, the two mares don't smell any different to the other non greys, but my sister's gelding does have a distinct smell all of his own - as you say, slightly sour - we just thought it was him, rather than something specific to greys.
ETA The two girls are fleabitten greys and he isn't - maybe that makes a difference? |

| We have three greys (one fleabitten mare, one iron / dapple gelding and one almost white gelding who gets a few spots in the summer!)- the fleabitten smell is certainly the strongest when hot and sweaty but the white one smells different than the other two who don't smell any different to our bay mare!! We just put it down to his age! He's nearly 28 - the others are 15,17 and 21! |

| Well, I have always understand that you smell of what you eat.....so perhaps these different horses have different preferences to what types of grass/herbs/hay they like to eat!! |

| I was informed once by a little girl that my chestnut arab smells like tea. I was a bit alarmed, I thought for a moment she meant fishfingers and chips, but she assured me she meant the drinking stuff. And she's right, he does. |

| When I was at University the Library had 2 amazing books about Arab horses and the Crabbet Stud- and it talked about smell in them- I can't remember what it said as such but it matched with the Crabbet Stallion at the Stud I worked at the time- there were times he had an aftershave aroma- yes really he did- not necessarily when sweating just in general. |

 Lol, this just reminds me of my Blue, (not Arab but grey) every one of her rugs smell like a dirty dogs blanket  my OH always reminds me about it. |

I was also wondering if it could be something to do with greys being more prone to skin tumors?
My boy is bay and has a smell like a mix of nuts and yes maybe black tea,or good natural hay,with a garlicky touch(not eating any garlic).It is similar to most bays and chestnuts i have smelled (love to kiss horses and love their smell)All greys i know have their peculiar smell.I am sure there must be a reason for this. |

I'm going to have to go and re-smell Kes tomorrow!!! I smell him everyday but can't think what I would say he smells of. He is a white grey (dappling on hindquarters only now) but I know he doesn't smell strong or odd. I would say my last horse, a bay mare, smelled whiffier, and yes, rugs......dog blankets
That's the rugs that he hasn't soaked in wee patches overnight anyway...... |

My grey had a particular smell - I liked it, but I didn't know it was diferent until I got Tamba (bay). Tamba has a very different smell to Jameel.
Tamba has changed as he has got a little older and now he has quite a sweet, meadowey smell. |

Our Marimbah smells WONDERFUL - a lovely, cozy, comforting smell. The OH assures me that if we could bottle it, we would make a fortune, LOL!

| Hmm, I'm the owner of a grey and I love his smell. OH has a bay and he does smell quite different. Will now have to sniff every horse I meet to compare aromas! |

I find all my horses smell the same (every colour) but other peoples horses smell different.
Just returned from Spain and their horses were proper horsey smell! not saying its bad but just strong.
Dogs are the same! |

| An old mare at our yard always disliked grey horses, we never knew why, but our grey got chased no end by her for months, perhaps its the smell?! Never noticed ours smell any different though her stable is more smelly then the other two. |

| I know greys have more hair than any other colour, maybe thats why allergies get worse when around them, I find them the hardest to clip too you seem to get more lines in the coat from the clippers. |
