Ozzy had his first clip this year. We opted for a trace clip (i think that's what its called) as he will live out most of the winter (with rugs).

He tends to get more sweaty on his face, by his throat, between his back legs and under his girth.

I suppose the type of clip you have depends where your horse gets sweaty and if they will be living in or out.

Ozzy was very good for his first time, so fingers crossed Baz will be a good boy too..!

If we decide that clipping is needed I would go for a bib clip (throat and chest) since they are turned out everyday, if this wasn't sufficient then I would extend to a trace clip, depends how sweaty they get during work.

Shesky has a full clip with half face and legs left on... he is always toasty warm and only wears a heavy weight rug when it's really really cold and never more than one. We do live in the SE though

Baz was really sweaty after our lesson on Saturday, 30mins walk and trot flat work, neck shoulders girth and back legs took longer to rinse and dry him then the lesson did!! should look smart

I always go for a full clip, just leave legs & front of face on...my 2 are turned out from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day, whatever the weather! They wear Rambo Duo's, which have interchangeable/varying weight liners, as well as the removable neck cover....they have NEVER gotten cold, even when it was -16 C earlier this year! Personally, I would prefer to clip as much as it is possible to do,to avoid the horse becoming sweaty in the first place....the sweatier they become, the more washing down is required & that in itself can bring other problems....!

Kirstie is still really warm and itchy so she now has a Kirstie special. Mine and her first clip Half face, all neck then down at an angle to middle of belly. Front legs look like they have been clipped instead of going against the hair we went with it now they look like they have been done but haven't.

well we started off to do a throat and chest but got carried away so it's a "sort of"chaser...all neck and just down behind shoulder to under belly. Looks fine (not all that good line wise as Laddie did fidget a bit!Works well as he does get hot to trot!

Roger isn't clipped at all; he hasn't got much of a coat and lives out 24/7, rugged when it is cold & wet. In the winter he's ridden approx 2-3 time per week, between 5 and 8 miles per hack and doesn't get too sweaty (only chest & elbows) so I've never needed to clip him.

Milly is being clipped soon as I know when I start riding her she will get hot and takes so long to dry.....so will have a trace clip, but then I rug her anyway, now she will have a few more layers

Above is photo of Jim the Cob's unconventional clip taken on Garnet's 26th birthday, 23/4 2009. It's easy to do as it follows the line of hair growth, making it easier to keep the lines smooth, can be taken as high or low as you want depending on how much horse sweats, and in spring when rugs come off the points (also on buttocks, allowing bumcheeks and inner thigh to be clipped) allow rain to drain off easily. Sam, my new 'RDA' pony, has just been given the same clip but as Red is destined for some dressage, ridden by a young friend, he will be having a more conventional chaser in case we get funny looks.

Never had to clip Arabi he never gets a really thick coat, I clipped Grace our Warmblood on Friday, she had a full body half face with legs left on as she gets really sweaty when ridden.

Clipped my PBA today. Decided on a high trace clip and half face as he really sweats when working. Difficult, as he is rising 19 and as they get older their skin is looser so was worried about nicking him. Went like a dream and now is a very smart clipped chestnut boy!

Garnet,
I love Jim the cob's clip; how sensible to leave points for water to drain and brilliant to incorporate the natural hair growth pattern.

Thanks Kharidian . When I did the same on on Sam the Man last week he was so ticklish and twitchy I thought the wheel arches would meet over his back before I got them level!

No need to clip my girl as she has hardly any coat. Love a clip though, they always look so smart, whatever the pattern. SuziQ, you could make a stencil with card in a heart shape for her bot!!

Goni is still sporting her summer coat (pretty much), just her neck which has started to get a little fuzzy so no clipping for us yet. I haven't yet decided whether to clip again this year as we're just mooching around.

If I do decide to clip again, we'll have the same as last year:
