went to see my little herd this morning and poor little Indie is very lame on the front, took his rug off and no marks but his shoulder was so hot, i felt the rest of leg no heat at all, called the vet who was there within half hour. she done a thorough check and came to same conclusion as me that he has prob been kicked on shoulder, poor little lad is only 18 months old and looking so sorry for himself, the vet couldnt believe how quiet and well behaved he was , even when she game him injection in the vein for pain relief, thought she would have to twitch him. well he is now in a small confined paddock, as has never been stabled and dont think he would settle, so got to phone vet later and tomo to tell her how he is doing, i have some arnica cream i am going to rub on him later , just wondering if anyone has any other ideas how i can help him , possibly herbal to aid his recovery,he is on but for 4 days and want to give him as much help as i can,, many thanks deb

Well you can get homeopathic arnica tablets as well - feed them to him in a carrot or similar, probably a bit late for Bach's Rescue Remedy (for shock) but might help if he's stressed at being in a small paddock. The main thing is to keep him quietly occupied - plenty to eat etc. Fingers crossed he recovers quickly. |

quick update. went to give them their dinner he was still in his little paddock, friend came and gave him some reiki healing which he seems to enjoy, put his bute in his feed, wont touch it,so left it with him, put hay out for him, and the little pickle jumped the 3 foot electric fence to be back with the others, put him back on his own and going to check him again later,, may have to stable him if he wont stay in the field,, |

Naughty boy!must not feel so bad after all. There was a thread on giving Bute as they don't like the taste in their feed, many saying some rolled jam sandwich being the best way. They seem to like Danilon better, which is also kinder on their stomach, but since it's only for 4 days you can try the jam sandwich. i don't think it's serious,if there is only muscle involved,he should be ok soon, maybe if he can be stabled with another horse next to him he will settle and it could be useful for you in the future? |

One of my horses was kicked on the shoulder as a 2 yr old. He was so lame I thought he'd broken it. He could only walk by swinging his leg, I really thought I'd lost him. Vet advised "gentle paddock rest on his own, but in view of the other horses". Well, after he'd jumped a 3'6" tiger trap for the 3rd time, I decided perhaps he should go back with the others. He was fine after 2 or 3 days. |

A few years back Arabi hurt his shoulder ion the field, I think he fell over as he was out alone so couldn't have been a kick, well he looked like he had broken something, but then I noticed the shoulder swelling up vet came out confirmed he had badly bruised the muscles in the shoulder and tole us to cold hose then put Radion B on afterwards so its like a cold hot therapy, he was fine in about 3 to 4 days but the Radion B did burn his skin off, I hope Indie gets better soon. |

thanks for all the comments, well he was in with the others again this morning, as its only 3 weeks ago i had my old boy who was in charge in the field, put to sleep, things are still very unsettled, the girls are still have scuffles and he just cant get out the way quick enough now,, so i had the day off and now he is confined to barracks, we secured the field shelter(looks like a prison with the bars at the doors) as he has been trying to get out, and the vet has given him sedalin to take the edge off his panic,, the others can come right to his door , but he is not a happy chap.,, and still very lame, so hopefully after a few quiet days,, (AS IF )he may start to recover,,, he took the bute this morning so fingers crossed that will help with the pain,, but he already has 2 cuts over his eye from a failed attempt to escape,, |
