I just wanted to know if anyone feeds them, and what kind as I wanted Arabi to have a bit more energy when ridden, he is very laid back, but at the same time I don't want him going silly are they a good option for this?
I have looked into most mix options with them but they all tend to have added molasses's, which I don't want him to have his never been fed it and I think its a bit unnecessary in the diet.

Can I ask why you don't want to feed molasses? Just wondered if there was a reason for staying away from them as I feed a molassed chaff and give molassed paddock licks, mainly because he loves the taste. I know some people stay away from molasses because of the sugar content, hence energy but as you are looking to feed oats (which have a higher calorific value I think??) that wouldn't be an issue. Just wondered, nothing more

Thanks for the info Calisto

Kes I tend to stay away from molasses as its only really added to feed to encourage horses to eat it, it does not really add any real nutritional value to the diet, and although gives them energy it is a cheaper alternative to use, also having had a horse with Laminitis in the past I stay away from it.
Arabi has never really had it in his diet and loves his food without it so I don't really see the point in giving it to him.
Once horses are used to a high molassed diet they often wont eat anything without it.

I feed oats in the winter but I soak a bucketful of them overnight and then drain them. I rinse each amount before I feed and they sprout which gives live enzymes and energy, but never makes them silly. Oats also gives a nice skin/coat.

This year I'm going totally over to Thunderbrook base mix and their rice bran, which gives slow release energy, but as mine are only in light work will only feed oats to the stallion if he needs it. Also grass nuts are good for energy i.e. Simple Systems.

Thanks Cate I did just look at Thunderbrook website, I have used simple systems before, what is the difference feeding soaked to non soaked? and how much do you give them per day, I really rate the rice bran a friend of mine used it with amazing results.

I fed my welsh x arab mare oats many years ago. It turned her into a complete nutter . It didn't make her more forward going, just made her buck, rear and spook loads more. Never again !

Let me know how you get on if you do try them. Ozzy is also very laid back, i'd like to increase his stamina levels without giving him more calories or making him spooky (if this is possible..)

I wanted to try the Thunderbrook Oats on Shesky as he was lacking in energy but Debbie thought they may cause him to gain weight, so we went back to Bran and hey presto! Super bouncing shining Shesky again

Thunderbrook also do a performance energiser.

I would have no hesitation feeding soaked oats though to something in hard work who needed more calories - used to give them to Pasha and they had no effect of his laid back nature... Alfa A Oil on the other hand is like rocket fuel

Yes you call them up and order and the feed normally arrives the next day You do have to pay postage, but I worked out that it was still cheaper for me to feed my two and at least no more dissapointment in arriving at the feed shop to find they have sold out!

Soaking the oats takes the fiz out of them. I find they keep their weight, nice skin/coat and even if they're in for a few days or a week because I can't chance letting them out due to ice and snow and horrendous weather they are fine. I did ages ago measure my oats again, but can't remember offhand how much soaked oats my little red scoop takes but not a lot. For my stallion I now just use the small red scoop I got from the Simple Systems measuring bucket. I've never found oats to fiz my lot up, but barley, now that's a totally different thing!

I now buy the naked oats and they have been sprouting like mad and the horses love them. Ahanu is always on the move especially since Pumpkin is back with us (our Hispano Arabe who we sold because she injured the mares so often)and they are both in love.

Oats are a quick release energy. The energy is released about 2 hours after feeding so there's no point feeding them unless you can feed a couple of hours before you ride.

Mollasses is almost all sugar, there is now a huge amount of evidence that proves feeding horses additional sugar throughout their lives can lead to insulin resistance later in life. It's just like (non genetic)Diabetes in humans. Additional sugar in the diet also tends to lead to poor feet, though this can be masked by shoes in the early stages. Simple sugars like mollasses also gives quick release energy, a short time after it's fed and then causes a slump in blood sugar afterwards leading to lethargy and sluggishness.
