Poor Kirstie got hurt in the field yesterday not sure what exactly happened but when she was brought in from the field she was lame and back legs covered in blood. She has a deep puncture wound behind her elbow, just below her hock has a deep cut that had to be stitched and the top layer of bone has been removed, on the other hind she has more cuts on her leg. Vet has been out both days she is on really strong antibiotics and pain killers and she is having both back legs xrayed tomorrow. I am in Ireland at the minute and cant get a flight back till tomorrow afternoon. I know that there isnt a lot I can do but hate the thought of not being with her. She is in the best hands as I trust my yard owner completely.

Oh no, that sounds terrible. I hope everything is ok when she's x-rayed tomorrow. I hope the cause is found - could it have been dodgy fencing or something dumped in the field?

Do give us an update when you can.

Fencing hasn't long been replaced and field is kept cleared so think she has probably been cornered or has gone back to back with one of the other mares.

Sounds awful but they do heal well from some really bad injuries. Fingers crossed there is nothing too serious.

Really feel for you. My boy had a field injury same week last year, horrific cuts to both back legs and fractured end of splint bone so had to have operation. He was in safe field with dry stone walls and no changes to his established group, I will never know what happened. Agree with Barbara they do heel well, he was over it long before I was! The operated leg has no mark and the other is tiny blemish. Healing thoughts for Kirsty.

Xrays are clear thank goodness now just hopefully she wont get an infection. The vet really doesnt like her today she had double sedation someone holding her front legs and a twitch and she still managed to stand on her only good leg and try and kill the vet. I did say she is normally a complete poppet could tell she didn't believe me. She is feeling so sorry for herself but as soon as she saw me she started calling and I got lots of cuddles. both back legs are bandaged legs look really swollen front legs is more silver than bay but the puncture wound on her elbow is starting to look better.
She will be on box rest for a while then walking out inhand and then in a couple of weeks turned out into a small field. When she is healed she will be turned out by herself but next to another horse, I cant take the risk I have spoken to the vet and yard owner and they both agree she is a very dominant mare, I am under no illusion that she probably started a fight with one of the new mares and she will again as spoke to the new livery and when turned out Kirstie had a go at her. Other mare has some small cuts on her back legs. Kirstie will try to chase her as thats what she does and I'm too worried she wont be so lucky next time.

Tonight her knee is the size of a small football and waiting to hear back from the vet, so I have been stood with her with bags of peas on it. She was so well behaved unlike this morning I was allowed to touch her all over and when YO came into her stable to inject her she instantly lifted her back leg and threatened to kick her but stood very still to let her put the needle in.
I feel so sorry for her but she seems happy in her stable.

Goodness what was it that happened to her?! Are all her injuries through this mare kicking her? Didn't anyone see any of this happen? Poor Kirstie doesn't sound like she was the dominant one.

Sorry I'm just so upset for the state she's in, poor girl

We think that she tried to chase the new mare away from the gate and managed to get caught in the corner. As she didnt have back shoes on she couldnt really defend herself. It happened with the boss mare was taken out of the field as while she is there no one steps out of line. Normally kirstie is in charge when boss isn't there but new mare seems to have other ideas.
She doesnt kick or bite generally she will pull a horrid face or if really pushed chase.
I haven't seem what her legs look like under the bandages just all the other cuts and I and dreading Monday for bandage change.

Good new about the x ray, lets hope she heals quickly bless her, it must be a great relief to know that she can go out in her own paddock when shes better, made me smile thinking about the peas, i used them once on my sons knee when he cut it open on some glass, they are very handy things are frozen peas

I know it's early days and you've got lots to get through first, forgive me, but does her future have to be paddocked alone? Were things not ok before this new mare? Sometimes horses just seem to take an absolute dislike to each other.

I just feel for Kirstie, sorry I know you must be up to high doh with everything

Hope the bandage change goes ok tomorrow.

She doesnt really mix with the other mares she is mainly by herself away from the herd. If she is in a paddock by herself she will be next to others who are on individual turnout. The field will also overlook one of the schools so lots to see. Its not ideal I would prefer her out with the others but I'm worried she might not be so lucky next time, everything that has happened will eventually heal I worry next time she might end up with a broken leg.
