Misti has been diagnosed with Carpitus (or basically arthritis!) in her knees by the vet the other day. She is fine within herself, but a little unsound at present. We've put her on a weeks worth of bute to reduce any inflamation but obviously this is not going to be a solution long term, nor do I wish her to be on bute for ever more.
I wondered if amongst all the confusing amount of supplements that are on the market, if there was anything that you guys swore by? I've looked at NAF's product range and spoken to their expert who advised on giving her Devil's Relief. This apparently can be used long term and should help her enormously. I've also looked at Global Herb's and they have a product called Movefree Plus which looks like it may be a good one too. I did suggest cortaflex to my vet, who said that he thought it wasn't worth the money!!
The old favourite seems to be Cider Vinegar and I wondered if any of you have tried that and it it was successful?

Haven't tried any of the ones you have mentioned, but our 20 year old has arthritis in his hocks and about 4 weeks ago we started him on Feedmark's Zerobute and Extraflex HA with Rosehips. He did a steady 24km training ride on Saturday with no ill effects (and thoroughly enjoyed himself being out and about), and there were some long stretches on fairly hard railway track. Who knows if he would have been equally fine without it, but it certainly makes us feel as though we are helping him. He is definitely moving better than he did last year, before he had injections in his hocks about 8 months ago, which would be wearing off by now. I checked with Feedmark and there is no problem using the zerobute with bute (if she has been on bute and you are introducing the zerobute, or if you have to give her bute for some reason and she has been on zerobute). Feedmark often have good offers on (money off) and it arrived the morning after I ordered it, which was very impressive.
ETA I tried human version of cortaflex years ago and didn't notice any benefit 
Magnetic boots might well benefit her, and don't involve her having to take anything. |

| Devil's Relief is excellent, we had an old girl on it for her last few years and it kept her arthritic legs mobile to the last day. |

| last year my old lady Ree 29 was diagnosed with arthritis poss navicular, i phoned global herbs they suggested movefree plus and zero bute,, within 3 wks she was her old self, no lameness on the lunge and happy as usual, i rode her in the field to make sure she was, and the next week took her onto the downs,, she took off with me up the long gallop as she used to do, and even the next day was still sound,, it worked for us even though i lost her in jan this year(due to loss of teeth and heart failure) our last few months were great, give it a try it cant hurt and you may be as surprised as i was by the results...deb |

| Thank you all for your suggestions and help. I've bought some cider vinegar today, so will give that a go initally. I'm leaning towards the Devil's Relief though and someone suggested Super Solvitax to me also. It's such an expensive minefield isn't it?! |

| Feedmark are excellent at giving advice and their orders always arrive next working day. I have one on Zerobute and she is so much better for it - she was mistaken by a visitor for a youngster yesterday! I use various supplements of theirs and have been impressed throughout - I like the fact that they state the contents of everything they sell. And once when my OAP accidentally ate a large amount of Extraflex HA they were very helpful and rang the following morning to see how she was - she was absolutely fine. So a very good company to deal with. Good luck! |

I used some of Feedmark's things in days gone by and had actually forgotten about them. Will have a look through their website and see what would be suitable for her.

| I used Super Solvitax and Cortaflex with Garnet for a number of years. Started SS when she started winning it in Veteran classes they used to sponsor and Cortaflex on vet's recommendation when she developed a swollen arthritic knee. May have been overkill but didn't want to stop either in case it was the one doing most of the work. Vet who originally dealt with knee was surprised how many more years I kept her sound and ridden and I have always maintained that had I not had a stupid little fall from Red which kept me out of action for 4 months, during which time she stiffened up, she would have been ridden for even longer. |

Sorry to hear about Misti I hope she responds to the treatment.
One of my friends (at West Kype) has an Anglo mare who has been diagnosed with arthritis in a hock. She has had injections into the joint with little improvement. Very depressing as she is only 10years old!!! I will be very interested to hear how Misti gets on and I can pass the info on to Anne who is devastated.

Thanks for your imput. I've started Misti on Cider Vinegar, which I wondered (given that she can be a bit funny about additives) whither she would eat it or not, but so far so good and I'm increasing the quantity day by day.
I've got several options in supplements to try and I'm leaning toward NAF Devils Relief at the moment, however a supplement that Lindsay has suggested is also looking like it may be very worth trying too! I'll let you know how it goes.

Can definitely recommend the Feedmark zerobute and Extraflex HA with Rosehips after this evening - they were all zooming around flat out, and Harley, arthritic and 20 was bucking, doing the full strut trot, galloping and kicking and instigating the nonsense - haven't seen him like this for years. Tried to video him to give you proof but failed to make phone work . Mum and I are very impressed - certainly weren't expecting results like this 
ETA Have found that he's not so keen on eating it unless we also add their fly formula which is very garlicky. |

are all the supplements mentioned above just for arthritis?
I need to find something to free my mares pelvis up abit. shes stiff and doesnt like to extend her hinds behind her. i want to put her in foal but am reluctant if she has pelvic probs. |

Kazarsmum, I think I'd ask an equine chiropractor or physiotherapist about that one to see if she needs treatment to free her up, but if you contact someone like Feedmark's helpline, I'm sure they would give you advice - the stuff we are giving Harley is to help with pain and flexibility, and as I say it is certainly working. It is also important to find out if the supplement (if you go down that route) is ok to be fed to an in-foal mare.
I would also get a full physical before I considered putting her in foal to see whether it is fair to do so. |

| Hello Linda. yes deffinately will be having a vet to her for an "all clear / no go" confirmation befor i go ahead. i would like to try a supplement first to see if it frees her up. |

I've been using NAF's Devils Relief on Misti now since the 24th June and the difference is amazing. She is much looser in her movement and totally sound now. She loves the taste of the Devils Relief too which is great as she can be a fussy madam with things that smell or taste a bit odd!
I gave her 100ml on each of the first 3 days and then dropped it back to 20ml a day from then on. It has worked well for her and definitely worth trying I'd say! |
