Yesterday the herd of livery geldings (including my Roger) moved from their winter fields to their summer grazing (45 acres) and Chips joined the herd; until now he has been on the home paddocks with one other youngster.

The herd all moved at 12.45hrs and I let Chips in with them an hour later. Chips was one of three newbies to join yesterday. Well - they all went crazy, and hadn't really stopped by the time I went back at 19.00hrs. Chips has buddied up with a coloured warmblood youngster who has been with the herd since coming from Wales in January.

When I got there this morning, Chips was still very unsettled but let me catch him for a quick groom (making sure his new BFF, Wally, was no more than a few feet away). He is unscathed (I'd got my trusty Sudocrem with me!) but appears to have a small impaction in his left cheek which he said was too sore to let me look at properly. He's eating well so I'll just see if it clears spontaneously but if not I'll get him in tomorrow and deal with it; I don't want to bring him out of the herd for a few days if I can help it, until he settles a bit.

Here are a few of the pictures, you can see Wally in most of them, the other big coloured is another of the newbies, an ex-Police drum horse who is being retired with us and the grey Arab is known as Snoopy (I think his registered name is something like Kaprice?):

He got rather sweaty - but he had probably galloped 5-6 miles, quite a lot for a baby!

And this is the majority of the herd in the field we call "The Telegraph":

Yes, the summer fields are "horse heaven"!

Chips and Wally are still very much on the outskirts of the herd but Chips seems more settled this evening (although he and Wally had been chasing around before I got there - all the other horses were grazing!) and he came over for a cuddle & a fuss.

His cheek isn't any more swollen but he's wary of that side of his face being touched, and under his jaw also. Therefore I think it must be more than a grass impaction and think he must have a little twig or something stuck (it certainly doesn't seem to be an external trauma i.e. a kick). As he's eating grass and crunchy carrots well and not "under the weather" (far from it!) I'll call the Vet to come out tomorrow as I'd rather have him sedated for a proper inspection .

Goldenmane I slept like a log (only cos I'd worked Saturday night, then only had 4 hours sleep Sunday before I turned Chips out)!

Fabulous pics Caryn, I can just see my weedy highland in the middle of the herd pic plus Herb with the drum horse on the outskirts, the ones you took of Herb with airs above ground were awesome!!!

My fave one of Chips is the first, he really is a stunning boy and towers over many of them already, hope his mouth is nothing serious tomorrow xxx
