I know that I might be considered an old fashioned sort of person, but since when does a candidate for this prestigious position tout for votes on F.B?
I find the whole thing very distasteful.

I totally agree with you. All candidates may not have access to technology and therefore a level playing field ceases to exist, apart from lowering still further the status of the office of President.
I seem to remember, some years ago, objections from Council about canvassing for Proxy Votes and veiled threats that these practices would be outlawed in the future.

What I noticed is they are asking for your name to be on the envelope along with your membership number. I have never had to put my name on before why now? I don't like this.
As for touting for votes I don't think that person has done this themselves but others are doing it for them. I agree it's unfair on those who don't campagne for votes online.
Personally I would have loved to see Susan George run another year, she was such a good ambassador for the breed and still is. I felt proud to have her represent us. |

I too thought Susan George was a great president but in the circumstances I guess she didn't feel like it this year. Would be great if she ran another time when her life is back together.

It would be nice to have a President who recogonises the existance of anglo and part bred arabs as well as purebred. An experienced president would be an advantage to all AHS supporters. |

There were two articles on pure breds in the HOYS programme written by our president last year.
I do know that Susan George had a terrible year to cope with, but considering how many anglo and part bred exhibit at HOYS - this was another opportunity missed, and the fact that they were not even mentioned in either write up, was a sad indictment for the society.
Yes it would be a great move to have a president whose knowledge and experience covers all three sections of the society. |

| Too late for touting for us - our vote is cast and the criterion we chose - moral fibre. Can't comment on one of the candidates but the other has, to us, shown integrity and courage. That's not to say the other hasn't got these qualities, we just haven't seen it evidenced in terms of the AHS and ergo - 2 X's for the same candidate from Team Templars. |

To think some years no one wanted to be president now we have two. Yes I see what you mean with the other candidate, I meant a dedicated breeder of just Anglo's or Part Breds to stand.
Well we know one thing we will at least have a president this year! |

No, it could not be a committee by itself - what would be the benefit anyway? |

it seems to be the most "neglected" section of the membership when one considers that the purpose of the Ahs is to promote light horse breeding .

Alistair,
I agree with all you have said in your reply. The Anglo and part-breds are the most "neglected" area within the AHS. I would suspect that this is one of the reasons one so many Anglos have gone elsewhere. |

Agree with Alistair that the Anglo does appear to be the poorer relation.
I do recall Alf Hallworth who was president a couple of years ago being at the Cherif and i did think it made a change to see someone from the AHS there- afterall it is the championship show for the anglos and parts.
Have to admit i did read the statements on the voting and kept an eye out for an appreciation of anglos as well as purebreds and of course ridden too. |

Alf Hallworth was a wonderful president - he went to visit every group in the country.
Yes, he was invited to the Cherif. It was in fact decided that he would be the last president/council member to be asked to join us, as no one had answered our countless invitations for years!! Alf was a delight to entertain and was completely bowled over by the standard and turn out of our ridden Anglo and Part breds. So much so, he is now back to breeding anglos as well as pure breds.
That's the sort of president we need. Someone who is interested in all aspects of our society.

I agree that Alf Hallworth was a wonderful President - the only one I have met and spoken to during all the years I was a member of the AHS. He made the points award presentations for both the North Staffs and the North Wales groups and took the trouble to come round and speak to us individually afterwards, taking an interest in the horses who had won awards - in my case part-breds of course. If there had been more people like him involved with the AHS I would probably still be a member now.
I also feel that Susan George is a good ambassador for the Society, but to omit any mention of the Anglos and Part-breds in the HOYS catalogue was certainly an opportunity missed - after all, the Arab influence is on show in so many classes, from the small part-bred riding ponies to hacks and riding horses, not to mention coloureds, workers etc etc. You might even see a big part-bred in the private driving class one of these days! |

Lets hope that whoever is voted on makes the same concerted afforts that Alf Hallworth did. It is so gratifying to see someone taking an active approach, visiting Groups and Shows and meeting everyone with a friendly and enthusiastic attitude. Susan George too, has been an excellent Ambassador.
We look forward to seeing who our new President will be for the coming year or so. Best Wishes to whoever takes up the post. |
