My mare Zarello is 25. She was bred in the velvet, but has had a chquered life. Since we had her she has always been easily bullied, but made great friends with a dominant mare who looked after her, so much that these two mares were inseparable through 3 yard changers until I got my own field and my own old companion (now deceased) I have been asked, by the owner of the other mare to bring Zarello to see her old friend, who has been given 3 weeks to live. This is in the hope that it will bring comfort to her, and allow them to say goodbye. I really don't know what to do. Will this upset ZArello, to see her friend so ill? i really want to bring comfort to seren.. but I just do not know. Can you advise me, please?

Really tricky, but I do feel that Zarello has said goodbye when you moved her to your own field. Maybe you going and saying goodbye to Seren would be the help the owner needs.

I would do it. I dont think she'll be as upset as you imagine, horses understand and accept death far easier than us and than their friend just 'disappearing' one day.

Also if you think like a horse and what we understand of them I'm sure if she had a choice she would choose, as any horse would, to be there for each other to support, give comfort and say goodbye.

I would also say yes, it will not only be good for the horses but the owner will take great comfort from it too. I think they will just be really happy to see each other and the future may not even be in their mind, it will be the here and now they will be aware of. Even if she is aware that her friend is so ill, as Fee said she will be of comfort to her, I think it would be a really nice thing to do for her, please let us know how it goes if you decide to take her. xx

Unless you are going to leave her with her friend until the end, there will have to be seperation again. Difficult to advise, but it might hurt Zarello more in the long run.

I have always allowed my animals to have access to ones they have known that have died or are dying, but in this case they haven't seen each other for some time, is it fair to rekindle the friendship only to have it taken away again. You have a difficult decision to make jackiedo.

I would take her for the sake of the sick mare. I would want her to have comfort in her last days. Your mare will accept it.
