Can anyone recommend anything to make yukky yellow tails White!
The winter mud is taking it's toll on Dines tail and I want something to whiten it up a bit for the summer.
His tail is black at the top, grey inside and yellow on the ends so need something that won't bleach his darker bits.
I read on here a while ago about tesco value shampoo working well.

| i think the only real remedy is too keep the tail clean and wash regularly keep in wrapped , most of the show arabs are done this way, you can get shampoos and stuff ( purple spray in the rinse water often takes a bit of yellow out , but make sure it is not too strong or you will have a purple tail) but they are not as effective as keeping the tails wrapped and clean. I have the yellowest tails of all here ! |

I used the cheapo stuff from tesco on my lad who has a very blone tail and it was good stuff. I washed it twice and he came up like a blonde bomnshell!

My friend who has Shire horses gave me a really old trick for getting white bits white. Get some Pure soap suds, (old fashioned washing powder) Mix a couple of handfuls into a paste, and put it in his tail. Leave for about half an hour, then rinse it all out. Works well on my lad, and as its natural it won't bleach the tail, or irritate it, although it can be a bit of a messy process.
I also plaster Zars tail in talc while its still damp, then plait it out of the way for the night. Brush the talc out in the morning, and its usually soaked in a lot of the stains.
When you do eventually get the stains out, if you put something like pig oil in his tail, it should help stop the stains clinging to it in the future. |

| Ive heard of glo white, that is used for net curtains, but i have never tried it myself as i was scared of what the outcome might be. A grey on my farm has this used on his body and mane and tail and he always looks gleaming, but like mentioned above, be careful your horse isn`t allergic to it xxxx |

I used glo white once years ago and the yard floor glowed fluorescent purple for weeks after  ! |

| My friend who has a skewbald with the most enormous (thick) mainly white tail swears by Head and Shoulders - I must say his tail always looks spotless when she competes. However I would say that he spends more time stabled than out, so I don't know how effective it would be on mud stains. |

id be careful with tesco washing up liquid aa friend of mine used it on her horse and he had a massive reaction to it, its kinda harsh on the skin if you have a sensitive horse, so personally i wouldnt use it.
me i use herbal essence :D the pink or blue one, normally in tesco on the buy one get one free offer i stock up and buy loaads.
i washed my horses a few weeks ago after leaving it from august!, i washed it 3 times good scrubbing, then its just maintiance after that its kepted plaited up and i spray it alot with show shine so that the mud and poo doesnt stick to it (i use this for all areas where he rolls too, mud just brushes right off). |

| I think Rafa was referring to the Tesco Basics range shampoo rather than washing up liquid. I use Vosene medicated shampoo because Lily gets itchy, I think you have to be careful with anything you use, because what is fine on horse A can irritate horse B, even dedicated horse shampoos. Have tried various specialist shampoos for greys and wasn't overly impressed - Vosene is much better value, and I rather like the smell |

I have the gallop medicated shampoo when I give his tail a full wash but just wanted something to whiten the ends up so il give your suggestions a whirl

You should NEVER use Head and Shoulders on animals!!!
I work in a kennels and it's extremely harmful especially to dogs and horses!!! It has a chemical in it which is poisonous to animals!!!

| Echo the warning about Head & Shoulders!!!! It shouldn't be used on humans either.......it is lethal stuff! Any time my husband has used it, he ends up very itchy and irritated. Years ago when I did hairdressing training, we we warned against it and told that it is so strong you could use it as a perm lotion for curling the hair! |

Yes, I did use Tesco cheap shampoo and not washing up liquid, also I only washed his tail and didnt put any shampoo on his dock or skin area just to be on the safe side.
Also, thats very interesting about head and shoulders! I won some in our school raffle and I usually buy my shampoo from the hairdressers anyway I started using this Head and shoulders and straight away I got an itchy scalp to thepoint were it scabbed
needless to say it went in the bin.

Reckitts Blue bags all the time for whitening manes and tails.
The bit about the pure soap flakes reminds me of the 'Jill' books, she was always pinching her mum's flakes to wash Black Boy and Rapide's tails in |

i know afew "purducers" (not arab ones) who recconmend washing up liquid :/ and being on other forums people do actually use it :o
yeah head and shoulders is nasty used it when i was like 12 (along time ago haha) and i had the greasiest hair and such itchy scalp it was crazy
i agree i have used number of "for greys" horse shampoos and they have been of poor result :( best i found but i cant seem to get it no more is a purple one in a big bottle, fab stuff :D |

Hi,
My first Palomino mare Ishtar had a sort of transparent white tail - which was like blotting paper for any nasty stains - and a lady called Margaret Coleman - who used to breed Arabs and Part-breds decades ago - told me to mix a paste of Fullers Earth and Hydrogen Peroxide - just put it on the stained hair - not the dock obviously - and leave it to dry - making sure it did not touch the skin. Rinse it off well - and the hair feels soft and silky and should be really clean and white. This used to bring Ishtar's tail up a treat. Fullers earth used to be the main ingredient for talcum powder - not sure if it still is. |

hi , I keep the tail plaited up and he has a tail bag that he goes out in the field everyday- its brilliant!!
I do take his tail out everytime I ride though, I shampoo it once a week( even in the winter) and use the same as Kirsty (above) recommends! its the shampoo for blue rinses!
well, thats not strictly true, its too bring out silver hightlights in platinum and blonde hair - I have beeen using it with great success for about 2 yrs now - and it can be found in Lloyds chemist (dont normally get it in bigger stores)i usually leave it in for 2 minutes and then rinse out - happy washing

| we always used zinc oxide witht he show ponies, you can order it from the chemist. i think gold label also does something similar, its a white powder that you mix with water into a paste, paint it on the white bits, leave it to dry and brush it out. |
