Further to my recent post regarding calmers for my rather anxious boy, I was chatting recently with my back man who dabbles in herbal remedies and he suggested 2 chamomile tea bags emptied into his evening feed each day....I have tried this for a few weeks now with a positive effect. He is much more relaxed and the jumping at his own shadow hasn't been seen for a while, yey!!

The only problem is I am getting through tea bags at a rate of knots and wondered if anyone has ever fed the chamomile powder straight as this is a much cheaper option. Is anyone aware of any side effects etc, there is a version available for dogs but not sure if this is suitable for horses.

Any comments would be appreciated.

I feed both of mine chamomile every day and buy the dried flowers in bulk, that's the cheapest way of doing it. I was recommended 3-4 dessertspoons of the dried flowers to 1 litre of boiling water which is used to damp their feeds.

I started feeding it because of suspected gastric ulcers which it is very useful for alongside other herbs. It is also a natural relaxant without making horses drowsy

If you have a health food shop locally that sells loose herbs for making tea with, ask them if they could supply you with bulk bags of camomile flowers. I get mine from my local health food shop, the bags are 1kg in weight and cost me less than £10. I mix mine in roughly equal quantities with nettle, dandelion and peppermint, and my horses have approximately a handful of the mix twice a day in their feed.
