If most horses have 18 pairs of ribs and the Arabian has 17 pairs of ribs - how may ribs does a partbred have?

And is the answer is 18 - at what point does the extra pair of ribs not develop - e.g. would a 99% pintabian still have 18 ribs.

Just think it is fascinating that Arabians are so physically different to other breeds and wondering how this came about.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Research has shown that while *some* Arabs have fewer than the 'normal' amount of ribs/vertebrae, others have the same number and at least one Arab (name escapes me at the moment) had more! Likewise, some non-Arab horses have been found with fewer than the 'normal' amount. So it looks as if -in reality - there is no 'normal' figure, just an average!

We don't need to count bones to know our horses are special and different
