As some of you know, Zar is injured and out of action for the forseeable future. At present he is on a months box rest, and after that he will be on field rest for at least the summer, and not be able to start light work until autumn, and full time next year, that is absolute best case, and not very likely either.
Today, it was a lovely day, the sun was out, and most of my yard went for a nice hack, whilst I was left baby sitting all the kids, as I didn't have a horse to ride :( And it got me thinking, should I get another on loan for a year or so? If I can put my big man on grass livery for a year, I could afford another one, so that isn't a problem, but I feel as though I would be betraying Zar in a way. Sounds wierd, I know. It would of course have to be another Arab, which makes it worse. I have ridden a few different horses since Zar has been out of action, and to be honest, I was bored to tears. I love the arabs way of going. Nothing compares.
What do you guys think? Is it worth looking? It would in some ways take the pressure off a bit for Zar to 'get better'.
Or does anyone have any other ideas. I am not looking forward to having to sit this season out :(

I know exactly how you feel.
A couple of years ago, my anglo mare broke her leg during a cross-country-event.
She had to stay stabled for 3 month (but I have to say, I had her in a 8 x 12 m "stable" as I wanted to give her the chance to move a bit).
It was very frustrating for me as well.
Even knowing that riding is not everything I sometimes felt like a bad owner having the wish to ride another horse instead.
Luckily I got offered another horse and I felt much better in that situation.
And that is why (I guess) I was a much happier partner for my sick horse.
I think two frustrated partners will be no help for the sick one.

| Well I am sure you would be able to find someone looking for a loan home, and must admit I do find riding most other horses boring. I feel guilty because I have 2 - my pony and my arab, but that is because they are both young and need work, and the weather this winter has meant they've had a lot of time off. However, if Zar is out of action for the forseeable future then this could be great for you, and great for the person needing a good loan home for their Arab. Just don't let Zar get jealous - Arabs are a bit possessive... |

LOL. Yes Zar is rather possesive of me. He still has stallion tendancies, from what I gather he was cut rather late. Its not unheard of from him to grab me and pin me to his chest if he feels another horse is getting too friendly with mum.
I suppose that is my major dilema. Its not his fault he can't work, and I know that if I tacked him up and made him go for a ride, he would do it for me, limping along without complaint. Its just how he is for me, and I don't want to upset him. But at the same time, he sees me riding my daughters pony, and that doesn't seem to bother him too much.
Maybe I should wait until his long term fate is decided? The frustrating thing is, I have seen a lovely arab mare for loan, near by to me. She's just my type as well, and you just know that if I wait, and then look, I won't find the right one. Its sods law. But at the same time, if I'm this indecisive, is it really fair to another horse to take it on?
Maybe I should phone this other owner and have a chat with her? Its not very often that Arabs come up for loan in my area, and most owners don't want to loan out of the area for obvious reasons. |

when freddie tore his tendon, it was ok when i was cornwall i had horses on the yard to hack out but when i moved back to devon and freddie was still healing but on grass rest.
i remember putting a post on here about if anyone wanted their horses exercised i got some really good resposes and also got to ride a lovely arab and had loads of fun.
maybe exerciseing someones would be better then he wont get jealious.
also what will happen when your boy will get back into work the horse you have on loan would you plan on sending him back or keeping? |

Why don't you go and see the mare and see if you get on? I think loaning whilst he's out of action is an excellent idea and as long as he's still getting love and attention I don't suppose he'll mind you riding someone else instead of him. And of course if you get a girl he might quite like her!  |

| Phone, you know you will anyway... But in any case, definitely find something else to ride. There must be someone out there who would like a nice ridden home for their horse while they do something else like travel or have a baby. |

Yes I think one on loan is a good idea, mind you if your anything like me I find it hard to part with them after a very short while so you end up with a few hope it works out for you keep us posted. |

| pity you aren't near me I have three two half breeds but with the arab personality. I am lucky in if one is out of action I always have another and actually got my big horse to give xsara a break so she wasn't doing too much lol. But it would be a good idea to loan another while he is out of work and then it means you can give him all the time he needs and a bit more and hopefully get him back to some ridden |

To make it worse, I have just found pics of Zars half brother on another site. He's stunning.
Arghh!!! was going to put off looking until I knew what was going on with Zar, now I just don't know what to do.
