I was just wondering if getting your horse freeze marked would result in you not placed at a show? I was thinking of getting Kirstie done and was wondering what others experience were. Thanks Mary

Im not sure but you never see the horses in the top line freeze marked? I think micro chipping is a much better and appealing option, Katie |

It shouldn't make any difference; you used to see the occasional freeze marked horse in the ring but, as Katie says, microchipping is now done rather than freeze marking.

Having freeze branded and micro chipped, I would always go for the microchip option in future, because I feel it is less invasive, although obviously you do lose the visual deterrent of a freezemark. |

I have thought of this but its not really a visible deterent unless you have the microchip brand. Mary |

Its totally down to personal prefernce Mary. You shouldnt get marked down in the ring for wanting to keep you horse safe. I just think micro chipping is just as effective as freeze branding, without the mark. xxx |

The only advantage of freezebranding over micro chipping is the visual deterrent. But this must be less important now that all foals must be chipped. In a couple of years theives wont know which horses are not microchipped. Also the freezebrand isn't visible when your horse is wearing rugs. I know I am stating the obvious here
No you shouldn't be marked down for a freezebrand, but human nature does prevail sometimes. |

I have mine freezebranded, how old is your girlie , as if she is a baby the brand will grow with her. I have had no problems with branding them and have 2 more to do this year i also have mine microchipped , the way i see it the more we do to deter thieves the better, my pal got her mare back when she was stolen as somebody saw her in a field and checked with Farmkey and hey ho it was here and she came home.If your girlie is ridden i give mine a week off although i think you can do it sooner, good luck whatever you decide. |

Both my Palomino girls were freezemarked - and both won in the ring. I don't think they had the micro-chipping much then - as Ishtar and Astarte were done in about 1990 I think. We also had our old pony Lucy Locket done - but you can only see hers when she is clipped - which doesn't happen any more as she is well over 40 years old. |

Well I showed my arab mare Perissa her entire life with a freeze mark and it never made a difference to her placing.
No self respecting judge would give it a second glance, and when I did my CHAPS probationing I was told to totally ignore them.

All the Russian arabians from Tersk have brands and its never affected any of them in the ring. I think any self respecting judge would ignore them |

My boy is freezmarked and it makes me feel happier knowing he has it and it shows. Also you used to be able to get special "this horse is freezmarked" sew on labels for your rugs. Not sure if they still do this but it is worth finding out. |

Thank you I would hate to lose her and want to do anything I can to prevent it. She is nearly 4 so shouldn't grow too much more. I can get a patch with "I'm freeze branded" on it. Mary |

My old boy Royal Lustre won his class at Malvern in 2008 and he was freezemarked. I agree totally with Vera that no judge worthy of the name judge would put a horse down for a freezemark. Microchipping proves ownership but it's got to be scanned first! By the time a stolen horse was scanned he would most likely have changed hands several times and the original thief never caught. Freezemarking is there for all to see and is the easiest way to identify a horse for everybody bar the owner. Very few freezemarked horses get stolen, if they are it is ususally by mistake. As an owner you get used to the freezebrand very quickly and never notice it. I think microchipping AND freezebranding is the ideal. |

I have shown at different levels with my old boy and it never affected the outcome, he is freezmarked and microchipped. I am about to organise freezemarking for my other boy as well. I personally would rather have it and have peace of mind. |

Our dear old "Ferzons Lace" (aka Lacey) was freeze-branded, but it was under her mane and in Arabic and as she was grey, you could hardly see it unless the wind blew her mane aside.

A non horsey policeman said to me 'its like a having a number plate on a horse' and he wondered why it wasn't compulsory to have all animals marked this way.
He meant that even non horsey people can tell what the numbers mean but would have no clue if a chestnut gelding or a grey mare (we know this can range from very dark grey to white) mare has been stolen. |

If you are worried about affecting showing prospects, you can always have the freezemarking done under the mane (which is what I have done on 3 of ours) though that of course does diminish the visual deterrent aspect.
I have heard that the organised theft rings have microchip scanners so that they can detect - and remove - microchips. And I am sure that they aren't worried about causing the horse distress when they remove them either! So I am a definite advocate of freezemarking - as Vera says, it's large and obvious (if you have it done on the body) so even Joe Public can see it!
I also have signs up warning that mine are freezemarked.
