So common gang- whats the stories behind the obsessions? I would LOVE to know how and why you all got into this breed- because everyone remembers their first!
Mine started when i was about 11 and worked as a Saturday girl at the heavy horse centre in verwood through a little gang way there was an arab stud- every spare minute i had i was stand and stroke their stallion 'boss' ( shows what a sweetheart he was to let a clueless 11yr old cuddle him endlessly ) from that moment on i can remember think this is it- this is what i want in life! ( still struggling to get there in poo and mud up to my knees- but i wouldnt change it for the world!)
So come on- whats the stories behind the obsessions?

Mine was actually a liver chestnut part-bred called Khan (x Welsh c) who was kept on livery at the riding school I started riding at and worked there at weekends and school holidays. I couldnt believe how lucky I was when his owner said I could ride him in my lesson one weekend!
Then watching the Black Stallion films of course. I dreamt one day I would own one of these beautiful horses and at the age of 22 (11 years after I started riding) I achieved that dream when I bought Tara (Vlacq Itarille) a pure bred Arabian mare who I have now had for 12 years and I love her to bits :-) |

My mum got her first arab when she was 16 and he was in my life from the start. Though I wasn't really interested in horses. Then one day, when I was 9/10) I rode one of the horses kept on our farm. It was my first time off the leadrope and the horse took off with me. I fell off and broke my arm in two places. My mum forced me back on kicking and screaming (poor horse!)...and from that day I was hooked
Then my first arab obsession (even though mum had one), was when I first went to go see Miska. We were looking for a loan horse, after just selling my incredibly stubborn 13.2 pony (he wouldn't walk forward unless a horse or human was in front!). I saw a very short advert for a 14.2 arab mare. When we went to go see her it was love at first sight. I rode her and was absolutley scared to death of her but I just had to have her! Best decision we ever made. She taught me how to ride properly .
Obviously I am not the most sensible of people |

hhmmm hope you don't mind if an Aussie slips her story in here too..
my family started out with welsh ponies.. & I still have them too, then my father bought a lovely Dark bay Arabian mare off the lady who got us into the welshies & that was it for both him & me.. I was only about 6 or 7 at the time, Mistral was lovely, & gave us some really lovely progeny.. the first of which my dad still has & who is really the love of my life, out of all the Arabians my dad bred & leased Rissaam was always the best at hugs. When I was about 13 I used to sneak round into his paddock & guide him lead ropeless up to the wooden fence behind the shed & climb up on him & just lie on his back while he wandered around grazing..
I love the Arabian temperament, their beauty & grace & passion for life.. & I haven't ridden another breed of horse who has the same movement & air ride comfort. currently I don't have a purebred, their all still on the mainland with my dad, but I do have a couple of home bred Arabian ponies, one of which is the Son of my Dads boy Rissaam, my boy is so much like his sire & is the colour of his grand dam that I am a bit head over heels for him too, & he's such a fun pony stallion to ride, takes my breath away with his love of pure movement..
aahh I am truly lost.. lol I will never be able to live without having an Arabian or the very least an Arabian pony in my life..
I hope you don't mind if I add a photo,
Rissaam only a month or so a go at the age of 20 |

comic genius- my first horse was a very temperamental unbroken arab mare after persuading my rents that i could cope (i could barely walk,trot,canter)- Joy Steele broke her in and i remember her constantly attached to the naughty tree Joy had- gave me many and hour of amusement- but also kept the head collar companies in business- stroppy madam- good god she taught me to sit! i have ridden allot of different breeds and always marvel when i get back on an arab- i just kick once and off we go- no 'are you sures?- just off and out with a lil smile. |

Mine started firstly when i was a child i remember seeing a chestnut with four white socks on the front of a book and then i got a part bred 3/4 Arab mare. She was bay and very pretty, I then rode my friends pure bred chestnut gelding who was quite highly strung and just fell in love with Pure breds. I went on to buy my old boy in the bottom right of my pic. My dream horse and still is Tariq Ibn Radfan. Put deposit on him at four months and still to this day age 19 i feel the same about him every day. He has never for one minute made me regret having an Arab. He is such a good honest horse I love him so much cant ever imagine my life without him |

well arabs umm let me think My sister and i were always hard to please when it come to horses, They had to be able to move, have good conformation, beauty and look at me attitude, and athleticism. So after searching for over a year for a 15h2 fitting our discription, we decided to breed our mare to an arab stallion(gizzy was the result). We also brought an anglo arab foal about 4 months before gizzy was born for a companion. Then two tbs youngstock, then another halfbred arab youngster we saw advertised lol. Then when enquiring about another half bred arab at the stud we sent our mare to they pursuaded us ros was a better buy lol. They already had the other sold. So 12th december 2004 we brought ros home. He was unseen as only saw him over the door lol, when they loaded him into the lorry he pranced up the tailget and he totally wowed us lol. Been a long journey since that day but worth it. We know have phoebe purebred and bred two other halfbred arabs. |

Other night we had someone ask us why arabs? We just told them exactly why, there intelligent, very pretty, excellent paces, great temperments, talented and can turn a hoof to anything, with a good jump. She agreed they were definately pretty!! Will soon show them when we have a purebred doing the riding club events!! |

I was 11 and lucky enough for Brenda and Vicki Marsh to ask me to show a lovely chestnut anglo mare called Miss Samantha. She was about 15hh and such a lovely horse. I used to go and ride about once a week and would gaze at the beautiful pure breds they had including the fabulous late JJ who was a very young man then (i think im correct in this Vicki?) Also a bay stallion whose name escapes me but was stunning too. After this (aged about 14) i then rode for another little stud (unfortunatley not in Al Kharifs league!!) though had lots of local success with a little chestnut mare called Mistala and also used to ride a chestnut gelding called Reaseam(sp?) and actually competed at a C show and got 3rd which although not an amazing feat when i look back i laugh at how naive i was! Being a show pony rider with a few lovely ponies at home i just took it for granted i would be in the ribbons! Now an adult i see how hard it is at this level and love the innocence we had back then. We then finally purchased our lovely Kerridwen nearly 9 years ago, swiftly followed by Dinki as we had truly got the bug by then! |

I was first bitten by the bug in about 1968 - when I sent my 1/2 thoroughbred mare to Silver Shadow 2nd - but she never bred. I then ended up showing Silver Shadow (by Tummundar out of Silver Paradise) under saddle - then his owner bought Alain (Silver Flame x Meshel) - and I used to show him in hand. I then got into Palomino's - then this year a dear friend gave me my first Pure Bred - Isharaa. |

About 7 years ago, i saw an ad in our local paper, a 15.1hh Purebred, chesnut mare, 5yr old for loan to stay at current yard.
My thoughts? Chesnut?..Green?..Mare?..Arab?
But it was only a mile away, so after a phone conversation, off i went to meet her!
What a beauty! bright chesnut, long flaxen mane and tail, she was gorgeous!
She was green, and a fizzy ride, but i felt safe and i adored her!
Her name was `jadeisha` unfortunatley not registered..does anyone know her whereabouts now?
I fell pregnant, and her owner sold her a little while after from Norfolk???
Kids or not..i was hooked |

When I was a little girl I fell in love with a beautiful bright chestnut with flaxen purebred called Frangipani at a riding stables in Kewstoke near Weston Super Mare. I used to go there every holiday and loved watching her move with her tail over her back and all her chrome flashing in the sunlight.
When I got my lovely 5/8 Arab palomino Fayre it was cemented. She is perfect. Bombprool hack, can be quiet enough to be ridden by a child, but looks so spirited and engaged when she gets to a show. She jumps, does dressage and has never even trodden on my toe in 22 years.
I cant imagine not having some Arab in my life - will have to get me a purebred one day. |

My mum had welsh ponies when I was a child but always hankered after a pure bred Arab, she had in her mind a Liver chestnut filly with a flaxen mane and tail, not a lot to ask, lol, she did get a liver chestnut filly but her mane and tail were the same colour, I used to hack her out and she sort of became mine as my mum stopped riding, the feeling of floating along just got me hooked, aside from their beauty and temperament there is no better riding horse for me my part breds will do( I do love my girls by the way) until Nabil is old enough but I think my OH and I are going to be fighting over him to ride |

Through a school friend who kept her gelding at livery at Pulpits Farm (this was 1977) I started loaning Maverick, a spotted pony; now, I'd had 6 lessons by then(!) and my friend on her gelding was not what you'd call "considerate" so she used to gallop off and Maverick just used to follow....any ride where I didn't fall off was a success!
Anyway, the livery yard was also a small Arabian Stud, standing Mikhan of Pulpits (Mikeno x Dragonfly) who was the sweetest-natured stallion....us livery kids were allowed to turn him out/get him in on a tatty nylon rope halter and were allowed to be legged up to ride him in too!
There were some lovely mares too, including Blue Dawn (Blue Grotto x Arabian Dawn) who was beautiful and regal, Bint Rushna (Rustem Pasha x Dukhna) - now, she was a character! The youngsters included the Fantasy twin fillies born in 1976 (Cochise x Castanea).
I started helping out (unpaid, of course!) and became Stud Groom - I used to handle the mares when they were covered. I also witnessed and helped out with foaling, handling the youngsters, weaning, and showing.
I'm still at livery at Pulpits with my boys but it is no longer a Stud and it is now run by Hilary's sister and brother in law.
Mikhan is still my PERFECT Arabian! Hilary always used to call my Roger "her favourite grandson" as he is so like her beloved Mikhan in many ways.

Well I was at a riding school until I rode for Joan, and I remember that first ride on muzzy I was so excited I remember walking up and down joans driving sitting tall and proud and felt like home for me
And then when I was looking for my first pony i was looking for a little eventer but ended up with a little pretty pure bred, then when i got to tall I decided THIS time I was going to get an eventer/show jumper but yet again ended up with an arab haha
Love um, so much character and so much love to give... very special breed that will give you their heart
I love looking into their eyes and how gorgeous and stunning they are... they just float
Although one day I will own a biggg dark bay (with no white) part bred who I can do Working Hunter with... big ambition of mine!!!
