... or rather bloomin walking in hand.
99.5% of the time Diva has been a little star with the box rest but she has only just turned one, has been in pain for 8 weeks leading up to her surgery, and now been stuck in for 4 weeks. She understandably thinks I am her jailer.
I have only 2 more weeks of box rest to go but I am struggling to stay alive at times!
She can be a little angel, and I have been able to leave her loose in the yard while I am mucking out but she clearly thinks that she is the boss and we have had a few misunderstandings of late.
The first one was a couple of weeks ago when I (stupidly I realise now) took her for a walk round the bridleway that runs round the edge of my land. I had been out with another horse but having no horsey helpers I decided to be brave and go out myself. She was an angel. Then tried the very same thing the next day and her "mummy" neighed to her half way round. Needless to say, when I wouldnt let her go to get back to "mum" I was well and truly kicked. Managed to get back home without incident with a lovely football sized bruise on the top of my thigh.
Since then we have been mixing being loose on the yard with grazing in hand in the paddock. All seemed to be going well but last night she was nightmare - rearing, hopping on hind legs and then kicking out with both back legs as she landed - a perfect series of "cabriolets" and "courbettes" coming to think of it.
How can I stay alive for the last 2 weeks. I have turned her out in the yard this morning with "mummy" Gini which seems to have taken the edge of her. But I am back to work next week and I dont think she is going to take kindly to standing in for 8 hours +
It doesnt help because she is already 14.2hh, very strong and with a bit of attitude. Any tips?

Glad you posted, I was wondering only last night how she was, the cheeky little is fine then!
Fee
PS Will have a think on tips, but I'm sure you'll get lots here
ETA Ideas...
Is there any way you can extend her stable to include some 'outside' or alternatively would you be allowed (by the vet and livery) to make her a tiny paddock outside so that she's still box resting, but outside.
Toy type things, roll treat balls etc.
Can anyone come up a few times through the day and take her out a walk (fully body armoured of course ) Even if someone can go in and give her a groom/massage.
I know some folks have had to put their horses on ACP too or maybe you could try some natural products like the James Hart V Calm.
That's all I can think of so far

Good luck!
On box rest for the first time ever from yesterday.
Mine gets the odd half hour in yard while I muck out on the understanding from the vet, she does no more than walking, luckily she just paces up and down.
Luckily only for 2 weeks...
However tomorrow off to pick hawthorne branches and stinging nettles - the nettles will be dried - friend of mine had her arab on box rest and she tied these in bunches round stable to add interest - so will try... |

Yes - she is happy and well Fee She has coped really, really well with the box rest and is an angel in the stable. Most of the time she just bumbles about if I put her on the yard or graze her. Its just the odd occasion that she wants to explode and I am worried that she will do more damage to herself leaping from hind legs to front legs than she would if she was turned out.
It seemed to work quite well putting her on the yard with Gini yesterday. I was able to leave them out for about 3 hours while I was here and they had a good mooch about and lots of scratches. She will do the odd little spurt of slow canter though and it is too slippery on the concrete to leave her unsupervised.
I dont know how people cope box resting really highly strung horses. Diva is very laid back so has been remarkably good bearing in mind her age and lack of training. I look like a storm trooper when I handle her now with all the body armour and my hair is permanently flat from wearing my hat for most of the day! NOT A GOOD LOOK!
Less than two weeks to go now. I will speak to my vet on monday about cutting the box rest a few days short. I do have a very small paddock she can go in that means she cant really gallop about. If she's with a friend she will probably just graze anyway.

Hi Debs hope your Ok Diva sounds like she is having fun, I used ACP and Sedlin when I started bringing my horse out of the stable, and for the first couple of times when being turned out, kept her nice and calm, as you say once there back on the grass they tend to just want to eat, might be worth just doping her a bit just so you don't risk her hurting you, let us know how your doing. Worth trying something like top spec almer & a nut ball? How about leaving a radio on during the day, some chatty station so she has plenty of voices to listen to? Can someone help you by leading out a steadying influence so she isn't asked to go back on her own? Can you give her something special (like a massage) when she goes back in so stable means treat rather than confinement?
Very tough, I couldn't box rest my mare when she had a bad tendon injury, she would have gone potty. Instead I did a tiny paddock next to her mates (so she could chat over the fence) & a nut ball which was reguarly refilled. She was in there for months & it was the best way to enforce rest on her whislt keeping her sane. |

Aw bless you all for asking..... yes still alive
She has been absolutely 100% perfect in the box - doesnt get stressed at all so I dont think sedatives are needed. It was just when I tried to walk her or graze her in hand when she turned into a fire breathing monster.
I decided in the end to put her on the tiny yard with hay and her "mummy" for company. This worked a treat - she clearly wanted some "mummy love". I couldnt go on the way we were - I was worried that the rearing and kicking out would damage her leg.
She is a little angel now. They have been out supervised for a couple of hours before and after work every day last week and she then went 12 hours with no company while I was at work. No problem whatsoever... have even got rid of the "Stormtrooper" body armour.
Bless her she has been so good that she just walks back in the stable as soon as I put an apple in her feed bucket.
Only 6 days to go.... Woo hoo!... I cant wait to give her her freedom. I feel so guilty leaving her in when she can see the others out grazing.
I'll try to remember to take some piccies when she gets her parole |
