Hi, I'm new and thinking of buying an Arab mare whose sire is also her maternal great-grandfather. Does anyone know anything about the potential impact of this issue? Her pedigree is at http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/vlacq+melika+kayal
Thanks

I'm sure Mrs Vlacq was very careful & sure of the back cross. It has to be done by very experienced breeders to work, which Vlacq stud certainly is.

Thanks for this. She is a calm but forward going mare who is quite heavily built. My previous horse, an Arab x, was not registered, so the pedigrees and studs are new to me, and so I'm not sure what problems to look out for.

There is no problem at all, this is quite often done to fix into the genetics certain good attributes in the offspring. Vlacq stud are experienced and know what they are doing. This is not close line breeding at all, there is a thread on here about full brother sister matings! But that is NOT to be recommended!!

Not closely bred so no problem. If you look at SE pedigrees you will see the same horses several times in the pedigree as there is a very small gene pool. If you are happy with the horse don't worry about the pedigree.

She is closely related to our Vlacq Redwood Reflection and more distantly to Vlacq Garnet who between them have given me 30 fabulous years with hopefully many more to come with Red. If you like her and she seems to suit you, go for it!

Hi Kate95 - hers is not a close breeding at all, and as the stallion in question was an AHS premium stallion, show and ridden multichampion, sore of countless show, WH, dressage and pleasure horses... not to mention a healthy number of 100 mile endurance horses....
she's a good bet!
Well built, calm and forward is the perfect arab after all
Let us know what you decide - always keen to know where they end up. She was a lovely sweet natured filly

Thank you all for your helpful replies. Did a 620 mile round trip yesterday to see her and, all being well with the vetting, she will be moving to Cornwall in a few weeks, to live with other horses in large fields, ride out on Bodmin Moor, do a bit of endurance, some schooling and the occasional clear round competition and local cross-country with me. She is lovely mare who will, I think, benefit from a one-to-one relationship after a number of homes and lots of different riders.

Hope all goes well for you then - and yes, you are probably right - that family will give their human their all....
