My stallion keeps rubbing his tail away and think it may be sweet itch tho not sure as have never had 1 with this before! does anyone have any advise for the best products that could help my poor boy out thanks

I had an arab a few years ago and he developed sweet itch and i bought the boett rug, i must say they are fantastic but are a bit expensive, but worth every penny it really did stop the sweet itch.

| Speak to alison at the SI centre (retailers of the Boett rug). Over the years they have tried EVERY imaginable treatment so hopefully you can manage his rubbing. |

Definitely agree with both of the above posts. I have a mare with Sweet itch and she lives in a boet rug all summer. The Sweet Itch Centre are really helpful and there website also gives loads of advice.
Hope you get it sorted soon before the really bad months start! |

It might be an idea to worm for pin worms, to rule this out, as an itchy tail can be a symptom of infestation....

| Sam always rubs his tail in the spring/summer, but he doesn't have sweet itch, it is just an irritation, I put Benzo Benzolate on it and it works fine |

| Working with a sweet itch one at the moment and echo the Boett rug they are brilliant. Mine is on Global Herbs Skratch (the liquid form) and he's been taken off his normal diet of pasture mix because of the sugar and is now on Simple Solutions Lucie Nuts (soaked) and their Linseed. I also give him their dried grass in it to slow him down eating !! All seem to have a positive effect :) |

I echo what Delyth has said - we were told to get the rug on BEFORE you see any midges at all - so our girly has been Boett rugged since early in the year. Kate says she looks as if she has a nappy on lol - and the hair collects in the nappy (which is easily removed). Only thing I have found is that she really doesn't like it going on or off - so we groom in sections.
We tried the skratch powder last year but have found the boett rug fantastic.
I do think modern diets have a lot to do with the causes of sweetitch - back to a non sugar diet is a good thing. |

Hi
I am using a fly rug (cheapo) and benzyl benzoate - available quite reasonably on the internet. Probably not ideal as a chemical but it certainly does work. Also using a herb skin improver supplement. Sure a Boett blanket is the ideal but at the moment rather expensive considering mine is pretty sure to damage it at the first opportunity.  C |

I bought a Boett "type" rug from the online auction site we all love... It's a bronze one and they are on there for around £70 plus £10 postage.... If you check it out it gives you a link to the SI web site I believe ... I have found this rug fantastic so far.
I do have the horse in an electric fenced paddock so nothing really to rip it on (keeping fingers crossed!) I think by the time you have spent on lotions and potions the rug is a better investment ...
Ooh... Sure someone suggested marmite too... Tried mine with it on his toast but not overly impressed :-(

Just put a spoon of Marmite into the feed once a day...my mare had it when I bought her in 2007 she was clear by 2008...last year I didnt give her any & shes now fine !!!
Only in the summer months when the flys are out in force !!
You can buy big tubs from costco so it helps with the cost

| My Highland suffers and any sort of fly rug is too warm when we get into high summer. I have found that NAF de-itch cream works well for him plus of course insect repellent and shelter. |

Thanks guys washed his tail in tea tree medicated shampoo today which he seemed to enjoy and have put a fly rug on him covered in fly repellent! boett rug will have to wait till i get payed unfortunatly but hope all this will ease it for a week or so! off to stock up on marmite now i hate it but lets hope he loves it

| echo the marmite and also use dilute dettol as a fly spray. the most effective ive found yet and about £2.00 for about 10 ltrs when dilute sue |

| my arab gelding has sweetitch and i have tried allsorts over the years. benzyl benzoate does work but can be hard to get hold of. the best thing i have found is kill itch by carr and day martin - it has benzyl benzoate in it and it works really well. skratch only works temporarily and is expensive - dont waste your money. |

| My welsh A pony gets mild sweet itch and wears a fly sheet which helps a lot, but the most effective thing to do is stable her when the midges are bad, ie when humid/after rain, dawn and dusk, so stabling overnight if necessary depending on weather conditions. Coopers fly repellent is also very good and only needs applying every 2-3 days. We recently moved to a new yard where the field is more exposed and she is better so far this year. Last year tried golbal herbs Skratch powder, not sure whether it helped but Becky wasnt keen on eating it as it smells strong. |
