What a waste of money. Am I alone in thinking this?

I don't quite see why you'd want something that large! Seems a complete waste of money to me. Think of all the hungry and homeless kids in the world and a £2m statue becomes laughable.

I like the idea (though would prefer it without a bridle), If it reaffirms peoples appreciation of this most wonderful animal (even non-horsy folk) then it is a worthy tribute..... Sadly £2m wouldn't go so very far in helping the needy in this world - a drop in the ocean :(

I agree Georgiauk every time i have to drive past that angel i cringe, a horse would look far more plesant , i could think of better things to do with the money though.

Would have been nice if it had been a 'proper' White Horse of Kent (lovely rearing Arab!)

Well I can't see it from my house but its not far away, I really dislike all these huge sculptures, why can't we just enjoy the countryside as nature intended it,

Looks dire to me! Complete waste of money, and I shall see it every time I go to work along the A2! Would have preferred a proper "White Horse" in the chalk and the money could have been spent on something in Ebbsfleet and surrounding districts which are very run down and depressing, with a genererally very disadvantaged population.

I also would prefer a White horse in the chalk, Arab of course! (That looks like a bad dream, Arabian Girl.)

I think the Ministry or department that pays for these huge sculptures are allocated a proportion of money which goes to them come what may.

I don't think they can divert that amount to putting more policeman on the ground or helping fund a new hospital etc. More sensible I know.

I am it seems in the minority that I love these huge big sculptures I love the Angel of the North and my only criticism of the white Horse is having a headcollar left on it, or bridle? But I think it's meant to symbolise the English thoroughbred Horse so it comes with bridle attached
At least it's not a giant unmade bed with unquestionable 'stuff' left around

In the South West we don't have anything but on the M5 we do have a wicker man that slowly gets his head pecked off for birds nests and I noticed yesterday he is going green with mould or moss from our damp climate.

I wish we had a huge sculpture down here, a giant pasty? they are good fun and in years to come will all be revered.

life would be a bit dull and grey without some art.
It can get out of hand though - look what happened on Easter Island!

I'm in two minds about it. Being a Maid of Kent, I understand WHY the white horse is being used. But a statue? Hmm not sure. I LOVE the white horse that was carved into the Downs above Folkestone a few years ago:

http://www.webbaviation.co.uk/gallery/d/38199-1/WhiteHorse-db50587.jpg

It's much more in keeping with the traditional symbol of Kent (the rearing white horse) AND the tradition of chalk carvings which is prevalent across downlands - think the white horse @ Uffington and the Long Man at Wilmington).

I live pretty close and the girls are kept even closer so I like to ride past it regularly (there's a fabulous bridleway behind the Channel Tunnel site, just at the bottom of the escarpment) and just take it in.

I LOVE the Angel of the North (been to Newcastle many, many times) but I just don't like this particular design.
