It has taken me a long time to tell you all what happened to my gorgeous home bred girl at the beginning of this year but due to the week I've had I feel I need to share my horrible experience.
On January the 4th my girl was rushed to Dick vet in Edinburgh with suspected bowel displacement. As you can imagine I was so worried. She was eight months pregnant at the time. To cut a long story short the first operation was successful, then the next day there was a complication. A muscle had ruptured through her wound so off in to surgery she went again - while I'm waiting for the phone to ring. After this it seemed very slow progress(this went on for two weeks) but that she was finally starting to get better. We went down every weekend to see her and unfortunately due to the surgery she had an infection which apparently is normal in these types of wounds. I'll never forget the Sunday I said Goodbye to her and watched her watch me walking off telling her how much I loved her and that she was the most amazing horse I had ever had. I never thought it was the last time I would see my darling girl.
I was home almost an hour when I got a call saying there had been a huge change, Poppy had laid down got cast and ripped open her wound. They needed to operate or put her to sleep, I had to make my decision straight away so I said operate. My phone rang within an hour and I knew by the vets tone I was going to lose her. He said so many things I can hardly remember but basically the infection had eaten away at her and her functions had collapsed. She was pretty much un-operable. I had to give them the nod to let her go and her baby. I was and still am heartbroken. I miss her so much and would have given my right arm to keep her alive. I really would have done anything.
This week my insurance has finally got back to us over our claim and we are getting NOTHING! After all the years I have paid insurance I am wondering why! They wont pay out because she had colic on her clinical history with my own vet -slight difference to an injection fixing it and not a bowel displacement. So be warned insurances arnt all they are crakced up to be and they had the cheek to write they hoped I was getting over losing my friend! I'll never be over losing her and as if losing her and her baby wasnt bad enough I've now been left with thousands of pounds of a vet bill while thinking I had insurance cover. Dont get me wrong my girl would have got the treatment whatever it cost that was never an issue but that insurance company I am mad I really am.
I will be contesting it, I would just like to get it paid and be able to move on as it just keeps dragging on the heartbreak.

Firstly, so sorry to hear that you lost your beautiful girl and her baby under such horrible circumstances. We lost a horse at Leahurst last summer after colic surgery and I know the feeling of waiting for the phone call and not having known that when you said goodbye it would be forever. Of course you will never get over losing her but hopefully time will ease the heartache for you.
As far as the insurance is concerned, you must contest it and get your own vet and those at Dick to explain the difference in conditions. I do hope you can get this sorted out quickly and try to put the heartbreak behind you. |

Oh Julie, my heart goes out to you, it really does. Sincere condolences for the loss of the mare and unborn foal. I would certainly contest the rejection of your claim. I once had a claim rejected over an eye injury that could have been very serious but, fortunately, was invisibly repaired. The bill came to about £1700. The Insurance Company rejected it because the horse was jointly owned and only my name appeared on the claim form. They totally ignored all my letters till I pursued my claim through the Financial Ombudsman and the claim was upheld. They paid out immediately and in full. Good luck and don't let it drop. Check your policies to see if they actually state that colic was excluded from your cover. Good luck. |

Contest it. My friend had a horse with severe COPD. Rossdales wrote him off as he couldn't even manage a few minutes on lunge at trot. Insurance company tried to only pay out percentage as said he wasnt a total loss. My friend contested with help from Rossdales and they paid out in full. |

So sorry to hear of the very traumatic loss of your lovely mare and her unborn foal....a double tragedy and very hard to come to terms with. Big Hugs winging your way and hopefully when the tears have dried, you will have the cherished memories of happier times, to bring back the smiles
A close friend of mine, had her Mare and two daughters insured for many years, when tragedy struck and she lost her ten year old with a broken leg from a kick.. The insurance gave her grief for six months before finally paying up. She had paid into the Company for sixteen years and had never had a previous claim on all three.
I suggested at the time, she save the monthly amount in a bank account and cancel the Insurance. This she has done....and seven years on and with no accidents or injuries....she has a little nest egg, available,....just in case!!
Farmers Union is the best IMO but none of mine are insured as could not afford to insure them all.

So very sorry to hear of the loss of your mare Poppy and her baby.
I agree you should fight the insurance company - are you allowed to name them? I am hearing the same name pop up time and again and am thinking of moving from my current insurer E & L.

Thank you all for your messages - it means alot. I am happy to name the insurance but by PM only as I would not like to scupper my chances of sorting something out if you get my drift. Thanks. |

Such a sad story.
Fight them all the way.Surely they MUST see the difference between a mild Colic and what happened to Poppy.
If insurance companies keep getting away with those scandals they will keep being difficult.

The Royal Dick are fab i sadly took my filly up to them last year with wobbler sadly she did not come home with me , but they were fantastic up there nothing was a bother to them even down to Scott Pirrie the vet ( think thats how its spelt ) plaiting me a lock of her mane so i could bring a little something of her home.Sending you huge hugs and like people said to me try and think of all the fun and happiness she gave you. |

Dear Julie,
My heart goes out to you after reading of your tragic loss of your beloved Poppy and her baby. What a heart-breaking post.
I was delighted to meet you and the beautiful Seren at the Grand Slam at Ingleston and it was obvious to me that you love and adore your horses.
To have to deal with this nonsense from the insurance company as well as the loss of a loved one is dreadful. Talk about adding insult to injury....
Some years ago our flat was completely destroyed by fire due to a neighbour. They said they would not pay out as there had been some kind of clerical error. This was THEIR error and we had to fight them before they finally acknowledged that we were indeed covered. Paid out a fraction of what we were due!! So not a fan of insurance companies now!!
I am sure with the help of the vets involved, they will relent and pay what your are entitled to. However, I suspected that no amount of money in the world will ease your wounded heart.
I think your beautiful Seren will heal your pain and bring you happy days to come. Hoping that things will work out for you soon.

Sorry to hear about this terrible tragedy with the added insult of your insurance company. They are always looking for a way out. However trying to stop cover for "colic" is too general.... colic just means "pain"... that pain could be coming from anywhere and could be a multitude of reasons. Fight it girl.... and I hope they pay up. Sending you hugs and best wishes. |

My heart goes out to you, not only have you suffered such a terrible loss but the stress of dealing with such unfair treatment from your insurance brokers. Keep at it, they should be made to see sense! |

so sorry to hear of your loss and for the insurance company to mess you i agree that farmers union is good we had a mare that came down with ringbone and was lame. we claimed loss of use couldn't believe they paid so quick with no questions asked full amount. We then sold her as a broodmare and we had to phone to ask about freezemarking her for loss of use and were told they don't have a company to do it over here so wasn't even marked |

Thank you for all your kind words and my vet is involved in sorting this out he is disgusted by it.
Sab2 - I lost Poppy's mum to wobbler last October, I thankfully got a while with her until one day she fell and there was nothing else that could be done for her. It was Scott Pirie who dealt with Poppy, a really nice helpful man.
If someone had said I would have lost both my precious girls within 3 months I would have never believed them! |
